This is not a news-worthy problem.
This fishery isn't causing a problem for Cap coho populations. It has more to do with the giant dam impeding fish passage up stream, the altered flow regimes of the lower river, channelization and destruction of fish habitat. Not to mention poor marine survival due to ocean conditions and unsustainable commercial fisheries.
This footage is difficult to watch as it is obviously distasteful and disrespectful. However, it's easy to see this snapshot and forget about our long history of destroying salmon habitat and depleting fish stocks that First Nations people had previously relied on.
It's too bad this footage was made viral because it only serves to amplify the animosity between sports fishermen and First Nations...
