Heading to the Salmon Seeker next week and have some questions for someone who has been there recently. I've been to Langara several times, but this is my first trip to the SS. I know the fishing should be outstanding, but have some questions about the gear, guides, etc. PM is fine. Thanks

I've been there twice, both trips were booked last minute so I got a great deal. Obviously it's 100% guided, so for guys that like to fish all day like me sitting at the dock by 3 can be as bit of a burn, but overall both trips were great.

The best area to fish up there is Freeman. It's about a 45 minute run in good weather. Weather is the great equalizer over there. Last year we could only get to Freeman one day. We got fish every day, but didn't beat up on them until the last day when we could get outside the inlet. The first trip I did we got outside every day and the fishing was unreal.

Most guys troll fish bait, spoons and plugs. No flashers allowed, which is silly if you ask me considering fishing seems to be deteriorating in that area over the past decade.

There are some huge halibut in that area, although a few guides seem to produce all the big fish. My guide last year felt that they have overfished the halibut there, but there will be a number of fish over 100#s come to the dock over your trip. There are some good pinacles for yelloweye and lings; some of the guides are lazy and won't put you over them because they don't want to clean those fish. Be persistant if you want bottom fish.

Have fun, should be a great trip.

I don't have a problem with the no flashers IF there are fish around. Think of all the resorts around Langara that don't even have downriggers. As stocks dwindle they should change their rules. If I went again I would bring my own flasher hootchie set ups and make the guide fish them.

I also understand a 9 or 10 hour fishing day, those guides are stuck on that boat all summer and they have to clean fish, clean their boat, get ready for the next day etc. I sure as hell wouldn't do that job. It would be nice though if they had a couple boats that could be taken out by clients after the guided day is done.

I do agree that they should ask you what your goal is for the trip, and if you want to klunk bottom fish they should put you on them.

Overall my experience with OBMG was pretty good, but both trips were last minute and 70% off so I wasn't too worried about having the perfect trip.

Only Oak Bay and Langara lack downriggers all the rest use them-and what if you put out a slip weight with a flasher/spoon combo.

Also-stocks this year are @ an all time high and using flashers has SFA to do with success rates.

Note I'm not attacking you just disagreeing-I too have used OBMG for last minute cut rate trips in the past but have found their operations to be very miserly.

sorry i have no sympathy, 9 or 10 hrs isnt even a full day IMO, try doing 16-22 hr days for 120 days in a row, then they can have something to complain about, they know the score when they sign up or apply for the job, its called guiding, not summer camp.......for sure is id be bringing all my own Tomic plugs and spoons and would be fishing them, dont care what anyone says, if im told they wont work in an area, well, even more the challenge i say.....

OBMG has all kinds of idiotic rules-like everyone has to fish in a pack all the time and they'd **** if you tried to catch a fish on something that everyone else on the trip didn't use-the guide would say something like "Oh that's Not Allowed" -they are a very parochial bunch.

A friend of mine's brother worked for them one season-as an ex commercial troller he found the truncated work day very easy but said he felt he was spending too much time smoking dope and not doing enough fishing.

From being up there THEY have all agreed to ban flashers for one reason and get back to a more traditional way call it old school or what.... What i think from my perspective is to get away from the "MEAT" harvest it did become for so many years. they even encourage releasing all the bigger ones and have incentives in place for that reason.
its called fishing and why not gets kinda boring if your reeeling in 30 springs in a day i rather have a couple of good quality fish on cut plug any day more fun in the fight as we all know flashers tire them for you.
but will say it is a different world up there ... have fun and go in with a good attitude to catch fish you will get them.

good luck wolf

great post Wolf. It's my belief that ALL lodges and guides have an obligation to conserve and teach people about fishing. OBMG has always been a leader in this area. To call any guide that puts in a 12 hour day "lazy" is a load. Just because you fished 8 hours don't forget boat , rod and bait prep. breaking down the boat , refueling cleaning and bagging your fish and lets not forget the hour spent posing for pictures and weighing etc etc. These guys work hard and OBMG does one of the best jobs in the industry in my opinion.
