In-line flasher vs. dummie flasher on C-ball

What is the better method when trolling? Hanging a flasher off the ball seems more user friendly ... is it as effective (less effective) as in-line?

I'm still trying to get me a salmon ... can get Ling (jigging) so I do actually catch'm ... just not salmon ... to be fair to myself ... I don't get out that often and this year even less ... the freak'n wind always kicks up the days I decide to go and me guts don't get on too well with the bigger waves ... lol !!!

The reasons for hanging flashers off the balls are:

1) you want your terminal gear/lure without having the drag of a flasher - more fun playing fish. This also allows for the use of lighter rods when using down rigger!! In this case the lure has to have action of its own and not need a flasher to give the lure its catching action (like a regular hootchie without actionizer)

2) added flash or visibible attractant ( especially for sockeye and pink) but in this case you have flashers in line as well.

3)flasher in-line can sometimes spook the fish so switching to no flasher or dumby further away on the ball, can get you more bites. No flasher in line can be very effective especially in clear water where added flash near the lure is not as necessary.


Reasons for using a inline flasher are:

1) Attracts due to visible rotation and vibration/sound motion very close to bait or lure.

2) flasher imparts additional action to the bait or lure that is being dragged behind it. The consistancy/type and speed of action of a bait or lure can be quite different as compared to when not using a flasher. This is why I think flashers are so successful ( as well as their overall visibility)

3) It is beleived a Salmon think a flasher ( and bait/lure close behind) is another predator that is going to steal THEIR bait fish so I think intices due to predatory competiveness ( I have never asked a Salmon this though

Either way.....you have to experiment with this as it depends on the time/day/ month/ year /species and conditions: practice practice practice.

Most of the time you will want to run an in-line; however, there are times a dumby is more effective, you just have to know when? If you do decide on a dumby, read up on how to set it up. Here is a good link for you: http://www.hotspotlures.com/booklet.pdf

I agree with both but I might add that if you just want to get a salmon don't worry about dumby flashers. In all about a few instances your odds are going to be better with the in-line flasher.

mainline flasher is slightly more effective

dummy flasher and light mainline is much more fun
