Petition by Blaine Calkins, the official Conservative shadow minister for Hunting, Angling, and Conservation, is leading a petition urging the Government of Canada to take immediate action on salmon fishing restrictions and closures that threaten our fishing communities.

Petition wording:

Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled

Whereas:
  • Local fishing revenues in the Port Renfrew region have plummeted from $26 million to $16.5 million, risking the future of our businesses and tourism;
  • Chinook salmon stocks are at decade-high levels, raising questions on the need for current restrictions;
  • Current restrictions are being arbitrarily imposed for unsubstantiated, ideological reasons;
  • Late announcements of fishing openings make it extremely difficult to book guests and fishermen to fit the limited access available;
  • Last-minute regulatory changes harm businesses, highlighting the need for guidelines to be established well in advance; and
  • Current fishing restrictions and closures in Area 21 and 20-1, have devastated the economy of the Port Renfrew area.
We, the undersigned, residents of Port Renfrew and members of the BC Recreational Fishing Association, call upon the Government of Canada to take immediate action regarding salmon fishing restrictions, and closures that threaten our fishing economy.
Hey guys forgive my ignorance but this seems focused on port renfrew? Wouldn't it be better to encompass the whole issue as in 80cm rule that extends all the way to hardy for example. Or the new 102cm hali rule that encompasses the entire coast? A petition that address all the issues would carry more weight, no? im totally in regardless but to get serious numbers if we focus on issues impacting the majority of fisherpeople then maximum buy in I would think would be best..Regardless im still signing! Good job.

That’s my thinking as well. Just focusing on 1 area is similar to the Liberal’s divide and conquer play.

It doesn't help when everyone wants someone else to do it for them. Sorry to complain but people wonder why things are way they are.

Who cares if it's Port Renfrew or any other area. It's the principle. Don't like it start your own petition. At least they did something to try.

358 signatures to an area that has thousands fishing it every year. It is completely 😔 sad. We really need to do better as a group. What's that 2 percent of forum?
