Nanaimo city council voted last night 5-4 for the immediate removal of the colliery dams ... gearth-colliery.jpg looks like greed and development wins over, people wanting Nature in their backyards... Kinda looks like prime development area for me, someone is filling their pockets , earthquake hazard my butt..:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I happen to know one of the engineers that was brought in to look at the dams. He says it is a disaster in waiting.

As an elected representative, ignoring that type of information would be negligent.

You decide.

How about fill them with rocks, displace all the water untill they are only a foot deep, problem solved..75 million to fix them?? im not buying it, you watch it will all be developed into real estate profits for the rich..

Hey, I'm not saying there isn't an alternative, just that it appears something needs to be done other than leaving them in the state they are in.

What the answer is isn't something I am interested in debating. I live in Lantzville, they aren't my tax dollars being used.

Ya just kinda sucks for all the people who grew up around here, it's OVER they voted , they are going to been drained, i hope at least they are going to leave a trout pool at the one end for the kids to enjoy...I just dont know why they ever had any meetings if the public had no say in the matter..

If we have a huge earthquake...probably half of Nanaimo will sink into a big hole as all the tunnels down there from the old days of mining cave in (lots of empty tunnels under Nanaimo).

I thought I heard the Nan brass (John Ruttan) say 8 million to fix it (the dam).....but 7 1/2 million to get of rid of it.

Seems like they could have fixed it for just about same price.

Seafever: i totally agree, if Nanaimo is ever struck by "the big one" the dams would be the least of the problem, all of downtown Nanaimo built over-top of old mineshafts. Im calling BS.. to that theory, they probably wouldn't be a second thought to fixing it if it were in say..Hammond bay..,What's next westwood lake must have to go then too hey. To the 5 city council member's that voted to have them removed ..Shame on you... you are a disgrace to the community your were elected to represent!
