huge tuna sells for 750k

Those high prices are bullsh&t. If you want something to go extinct real fast just make them worth that kind of fortune and watch the black market take over and wipe them out. The next new reality show airing after "Gold Rush" will be "Illegal High Seas Blue Tuna Wars".

Already happening profisher. The fish in question weighed barely over 600 pounds. Jump back a little better than a decade ago, that size would have been at the mid-range of weights seen in that same market. The real Biggies ran better than double that size, with the odd Monster well above that. Those Giants no longer exist. 6-700 pounds is today's "large" blue fin. They are in desperate straits. This is common knowledge amongst the fisheries scientists that study them world wide. Just a short time ago, their recommendation was to quarter the catch, or face exterminating this species. In the face of pressure from Japan, the cut to the catch was less than a third.

This decline can be directly attributed to the Japanese, their hunger for sushi, and their blatant disregard for anything even approaching conservation. A pattern they repeat with many species of ocean life. They consume greater than 80% of the blue fins caught world wide, and there is not the slightest hint that they are willing to slow that rate of consumption down. Prices will and are climbing. What will be the cost of the last one?

Given the Japanese' overbearing presence in most oceanic fisheries, methinks the world better wake up and devise a program to make them adhere to safe, conservation oriented fishing practices. Dam tough nut to crack alright. But unless we do so, they'll simply carry on to the point the only thing left out there will be jellyfish.

Sad! Disgusting actually... :(

This happens every year-the First Big Tuna is sold for an outrageous price as a marketing gimmick.

Also-the idea that huge BFT are caught in Tokyo Bay is ludicrous.

Have to agree with everything you have said there Nog. The Japanese are a study of what will happen (is happening perhaps?) in the rest of the world in time. They have a huge population on a group of small, resource poor islands which cannot possibly support them all agriculturally so they have to go after every available world wide resource, to exhaustion if necessary, pushing the prices ever upwards in the competition for high quality (or any) food. It is just demographics and economics.
The only way they would even think of stopping some of their current practices would be if there were a world wide boycott of all Japanese products (cars, electronics. cameras etc.) thus hurting them economically but that is never going to happen......

Don't be so quick to damn the Japanese alone. They have a hungry neighbour with the same insatiable appetite, and almost 600 million of their 1.3 billion are now gaining "wealth" (i.e. approaching middle class) enough to buy the same "delicacies". One might call this more of an Asian Phenomena rather than a Japanese issue. Unfortunately those cultures do not seem to see the need for conservation..........or effective birth control:(

In terms of Sushi consumption within a 5 minute walk of my place in Vancouver there are no less than 9 sushi restaurants-all doing a roaring trade 7 days a week.

Every neighbourhood in this city is jammed with sushi places and more are opening all the time.

want to see what the bluefin market is all about watch end of the line. posted a thread about it a bit ago. Also Dog, i can assure that most of those sushi joints in Van arent serving bluefin.

It's brutal and disgusting to watch humans wipe out whole species. For such an intelligent being, we sure can be idiots. We all can affect this market and other fish related markets to a small extent. Do not support restaurants that offer blue fin tuna, non-wild salmon, tiger prawns, etc. Really the best thing to do is ask where the seafood you are considering is from. I know this is probably obvious to most of the folks on here, but just thought I'd echo my thoughts.

Yes most of what's on offer is Albacore sometimes YFT even Bonito depending.

But since this thread started to go in the direction of beating people up for what they ate I added some perspective for people who don't leave the trailer park much.

Here's a little more-I'm such a lard arsed ratbag I ate @ Fuji Ya for lunch Tuesday and yesterday @ Zero One on Pender St isn't that disgusting!?

If I can swing it I'm headed to Hitoe tomorrow for dinner!

Honestly I don't know how I can stand myself!
