Tonight and Thursday Strong wind warning in effect. Wind northwest 10 to 15 knots becoming southeast 10 to 15 this evening then increasing to southeast 15 to 25 near midnight. Wind diminishing to southeast 10 to 15 Thursday morning and to light Thursday afternoon.

"did any one in the office today really look out the window "
utter joke flat clam all day
canceled going out this morning because of this report

Look at the conditions at halibut bank. Winds were more or less as forecast. The strong wind warning was for after midnight and was justified.

Between the ec forecast and other sources I could tell it would be a nice evening and it sure was.

I find EC's accuracy not too bad and in this case it was actually quite accurate about the Strong wind coming near midnight. Maybe just reader misinterpretation? EC were a little high on the forcast wind for earlier in the day but 6-12 is not too far off the prediction of 10-15 but we're splitting hairs now! Yes EC do make mistakes sometimes ....it is a prediction though, not a promise! lol The whole text and detail of the forecast needs to be read , not just reading the "STRONG wind warning" statement and assume the whole day is going to have those strong winds. Not sure that's what happened but just trying to see how one can find that Strong wind report to have been wrong. At midnight is was gusting 18 ....by 3 am it was gusting 25 just as predicted.

I'm not so sure about WindyTy. It frequently doesn't correspond at all to EC current conditions, or the weather bouy data on WonderMap. For instance, right now Windty is reporting 3knts wind SSE (140) at Race Rocks, whereas Wondermap reports 12knots WSW.

+/- 5 knots is the best you can hope for from any weather forecast... And we all know there is a big difference in conditions between 10 and 15 knots.

There is a bit of a knack to reading between the lines of the EC forecast; knowing when they are pretty sure of themselves and when they are covering their behinds.

Windyty is a great tool to help visualize what might going on (or what is likely to happen in a few hours) but it is still a mathematical representation of what is possible (a prediction). The current conditions from EC (http://weather.gc.ca/marine/forecast_e.html?mapID=02) or NOAA's buoys (http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46087 for example) + the information from a site like windyty should really be used (they are free). Give yourself as much information as possible; you'll be better off for it.

Straight of Georgia south of Nanaimo is a big body of water, and we're stuck in the corner. Look to halibut bank and sandheads light station for local conditions. If it says 15kts all day and halibut bank is showing 4kts, I'd predict that the heavier wind isn't reaching our corner. Just be cautious of heavy NW waves

the wind warning was posted for Wednesday morning afternoon i pulled it from the evening
as such the guys out at the hump during the day and eve reported back it was almost flat clam no ripple or chop
as i look out over langdale to almost horseshoe bay it was pertty clam even in the sound

windyty has successfully replaced Big Wave Dave for me. I use the pressure forecasts and wind forecast, and only follow Washington State Forecast which are more accurate. Enviro is hardly correct.

Keep in mind this time of year the currents play a large role on water conditions. You can fish a strong wind sometimes if current is same direction. Its equally important to know what current is doing as well as the wind. You can have 10 knot winds with opposing current and have very rough water especially when the moons are the strongest new, and full.

I have fished in Nanaimo and was amazed of how rough the water can get. Especially around the fingers etc if you time it wrong.

For JDF and Sooke all I use this. Higher the pressure gradient between stations higher the wind. Its usually pretty much right most of time.View media item 107
