How many fish have you cut off???

Out yesterday trying to scratch up another couple springs for the wife. The fishing has been slow, with a couple springs every trip in the box, not like it was last year.

Anyways, the top rod, w/the 4 oz's, 8" flasher and pink squirt gets hammered by a good spring and off it goes. It runs out into the deep water and I think great, I get the other lines in and start to chase to get on top of the fish. I notice one boat turns away and then another, so people can see us playing a fish. The fish is about 20 yards away and just running parallel along the surface. I get the net ready and look up to see a boat trolling right at us and the fish. I yell and two guys, both looking backwards, jump up out of their seats and look at us. One realizes what is going on, but reacts to slow and as we all know, the line suddenly goes slack. Cut Off:(

I yell at the two of them that someone should have been paying attention instead of both staring at the rods. One guy asks how long we have been playing the fish, I say 4-5 min, he shrugs and then says....

"I have been fishing for 25 years and this is only the second fish I have cut off"

WTF??????[?]Second fish?????

and thats it, no sorry or any type of appology. He quickly turns the boat away and resets his gear.

I was mad, but the wife was pissed!!!!!!

and to finish the day, we ended up with three sockeye and three small teen springs, which were all released. The smiley was released by an *******.:(

In 35 years of fishing, I have never cut off a fish, even in the crazy days at Cape Beal, before the outside was being fished.

Rant finished

So have you ever cut off or had a fish cut off, either accidently or delibertly???

Cheers

That just sucks, sorry to hear

I have never cut off anyones fish, I have pulled riggers and cut my line, but never lost someones fish. Every season i used to lose fish to other boaters, that changed two years ago. When I get a big fish on, I worry about the position of my boat and others, once I get the space to fight a fish, I then worry about the other lines and downriggers. I find most people are quite good, but the ones that will not move, I get very aggressive and will run them while we are fighting the fish, and yelling and honking the horn, by then all the other boaters are yelling at them.

hope the next one you get is bigger

I was fishing at Bamfield a few years back. I hooked a nice spring when it bee-lined straight for another boat. It went straight under their boat and got caught on their motor leg. Then another boat trolled straight between us. I was screaming at the top of my lungs for them to get their lines up. I thought for sure the fish was gone. The guy in the second boat got his downrigger up, and saw my line around his ball. He pushed it down and off his line. That's one boat clear. As we putted over to the first boat they had the leg trimmed up and were trying to untangle my line from their prop. One guy in the boat said "Hey, there it is, get me the net!" He hand lined in about thirty feet of line and netted the fish. Then he handed me the net.
It was 27lbs, and cost me a case of beer (well worth it). I don't know how we got that fish. Sometimes you get exteemely lucky. I also made a lifelong friend out of that one.

AHHHHH quite a few all by accident thats for sure one was addicted which I thought there was no way in hell there was that much line out.
as he was about 100yds away up on the mud flats at muir he even said nope your fine DAMN nope around the riger poof gone $HIT couldt believe it all you can say is sorry, another time off of sec in the fog look up and see a another buddy get one on before I could even move it was over and done so fast both time allI could say was sorry!!!!!

Worse that has ever happened to me was at possesion the boat "WILD CAT" I call him cut off paul as thats his name and the worst driver ever out there had a fish on he delibertlly cut in and cut it of Im yelling HEY I got a fish on!!!! his response"IM TIRED OF U CATCHING FISH" my clients look at me completlly dumbfounded im in kinda shock and cant believe what I just saw so me being me had to say some nice things to him..... then he yells back "YOUR LUCKY I DONT HAVE MY 45"

So if you ever see him stay clear hes a bit of a madman..

I have not yet cut anybody off a fish, but have had it happen to me once out at the lighthouse at Nootka a few years ago.

I was coming in from Bajo and nearing the light one afternoon, and if your anything like me ,if it's open,I just can't go by that place without taking a tack along the shore/kelp so down go the lines, hugging the shoreline in the foam...
There's not many boats, maybe 4 or 5 there, and I'm all by myself as I come around getting close to the kelp bed thats out front, bam, I'm into a nice spring, it runs strait out back from the boat like mad,my father inlaw is trying to get the other line up so we can chase it down,I'm trying to control/slow this beast down, now comes a boat with three guys in it around the corner from the NW and I'm waving them off,and he waves back![?] , I yell out"fish on" while waving him off, he waves back[?][?]
OK now I'm getting a little upset:(,my fish is now gone under his boat and comes up just 10ft behind his boat SPLASH and slack line, it's been cut off-gone[:0], then one of their rods pop from their rigger and he's playing "MY" fish, I'm pissed, after a few minutes, I bring the boat close to them, I said "you cut me off and thats my fish" ,"no there's your flasher there" one says as he points to his other line just behind his boat,"thats not my flasher wrong color and with a spoon on it" I says...
now by this time my father inlaw has started to take the boat away and out from them like were heading back into camp, I'm like where you going? I'm not leaving without my fish!...
so I follow along while they play/net the fish.
Yes it was my fish and they do bring it along side and hand over a 28lb beauty along with a rats nest of line:D..

and.... to add to the story it was all caught on video from one of the 3 guys in that boat, they had been taping when they came around the corner and were not really paying attention to what else was going on around them at the time....
the fellow with the boat was from Parksville and I wish I had written down there names/ph# would love to watch that again...

sitting there rafted to each other after, we all had a good laugh, exchanged hand shakes and went our seperate ways....

Ive cut off one spring in my life, It was in the trap some guy trolling the wrong dirrection left rod to shore hooked a slab then tried to cut out across the 50 boats in there and the fish beelined right to my rigger, Before i could get my rigger up I felt a little bump and his line broke. I have had my share of fish cut off. "Wild Cat" cut one of my biggerst fish Ive ever had on off. Was near 40 id say. It ran about 300 ft on the surface and He turned right over my line and then after my line broke I was yelling so much he just gave me a wave and a nod. I was livid.

Another fellow from Cheanuh trailer park has an Arima has cut me and my grandfather off a combined 3 times. What a Joke. I dunno of its the luckys or what.

I got yelled at by a local who blamed me for cutting off his fish at Rosa a few years ago. I've played it back in my mind many times, and I don't think I did.

If I did - why did he wait til the next day to yell at me in the local coffee shop instead of on the water when it happened? I don't even remember seeing him playing a fish and if it did happen, he was a long ways from me when it happened. The guy is a real hothead and I'm sure would have charged the boat had I cut off his fish. I think he mistook another boat for mine.

The same guy found me trolling in a closed area a couple of years ago because I couldn't read the black & white reg. map that I had to print at home because DFO is too f'n cheap to hand out printed color maps of all their regs, and too stupid to differentiate the areas with marks that will show in b&w.

Instead of coming along side and informing me. He charged directly at us full throttle and killed his motor so that he stopped about 10' off my port stern - with wided eyed guests onboard who were almost ready to jump from the boat becuase they thought he was going to ram us! Then he proceeds to yell and rant about how I should know better etc. etc. After he leaves, I called DFO on the radio, and it took them 15 minutes to figure out if the area was open or not. It wasn't open. Oops [:I]

We had been fishing Hoiss Point which was open, and had crossed the boundary to troll towards home at the end of the day. Honest mistake, but then I only fish that side about once or twice a year and I wasn't up to date on all the regs on the Nootka side. Ask me about Esperanza where I spend 99% of my fishing time. Different story!

Anyway, I would never knowingly cut off someones fish. One time I saw a fish run across my bow and hit reverse with the resulting entanglements of my lines & downriggers to avoid a cutoff! If I'm willing to do that, I figure I'm do'n it right.

Now another story:

One time I was fishing at the Nootka lighthouse. There is a little bay in the rocks that you can troll into if you have a small boat. Your average 24' charter boat would not be able to turn to get out of it without ending up in the kelp beds that line this little opening.

If you keep your lines close to the downriggers and 10 - 20' deep, you can get in there in a 16' boat and turn it hard over and get out without tangles and snags.

I was getting set up to go in there from the standard tac - the opening is on my right side. There are other boats coming towards me on the outside tac. All of a sudden, this boat turns right in front of me and enters the opening. He was so close when he did it that I had to throw it into reverse to avoid hitting him! My plan was to let him get clear and then I would just bypass and take a turn next time round. As I looked past him, coming towards me was another of our lodge boats and the guide was waving frantically at me to speed up. On our radio channel, I hear "Cut his lines! Cut his lines!"

I dropped the inside downrigger deep and hit the throttle. I looked back to see this idiot running for his bouncing rod. I cranked up my downrigger to find he was only running a cutplug. Didn't even get any good gear out of the deal. I still laugh at that one. [}:)] :D

A few as well, all unintentional. I've had way more of my fish cut off, have saved a bunch of my own fish after getting into others gear, and have saved many that got into my gear but cleared them. Way to many stories from all the years of fishing. But if I had to pick one...this would be it.
I had a good day up at Sheringham and was cleaning the catch at the marina. A regular (annual) visitor from Alberta asked where I had been. I thought for a second and decided to tell him. The next morning I head back up to the light with a regular elderly client from California. I was on my first tack about half way along and a rod goes off hard. The reel is screaming, I give the rod to Stanley. The reel never slows down, just continuous screaming out of line. I look back and here comes the Albertan up my tail. He's in the back of his cabin boat and can't see or hear me ahead of him. He finally spots us and turns to the inside, to late. The fish never slowed down, his rigger cable cut us clean. Poor old Stanley never even got to put a finger on a knob of the reel! A few minutes later I heard "Wolf" calling "Foghorn" for a fishing report. Foghorn replys "I'll get back to you my gear is all messed up right now". I thought to myself the water is clean and I didn't see him into a fish. He was the next boat behind us (another 300 feet) when we got cut off, he was heading away from us at the time. I called him and asked whats up? He comes back and says "I got your fish Rollie". Our fish had swam free for 300 feet trailing enough line to wrap into his gear. In fact by the time he managed to net the fish, it had tangled into all 3 of his rods and riggers. Therefor the big mess he was dealing with. He gave Stanley his fish back at the end of our trip. It went 34 pounds and was the only fish we hit that morning. Stanley was happy to get his fish, but I felt sorry for the fact he never got to play it at all. This is one story (of many) that should tell you that "Foghorn" is a good guy!

I have cut off and been cut off more times than i can count!!None intentional on either party im sure, but when you try to fish 50 boats in an area only good for fishing 10 its just part of the game!!

I had it happen to me today at Bere Pt. I had a guest on board who had never caught a large spring before. Well today he played a very nice fish for approx 30 minutes when a boat came across our bow at 30 yards. Of course the fish ran strait at them and got caught in their cable. They were very sorry but it still sucks. I do not know why people need to get so close to see what is happening.

A big thank you for that!

2 of the 3 fish i had cut off were by guides .one did not care & actually snagged my fish & had his client try to reel it in the old guy was having a problem bringing it in probably because it was still dragging my gear so the guide grabs the rod & proceeds to fight the fish which is by now going around the front of his boat when he finally boats the fish i see clearly my gear attached to the fish & his simular rig attached to mine to add insult to injury he turns his back to me thinking i could not see what he was doing then tosses my gear over the side my guest (who has just had his biggest fish ever shanked off by this!!!!head)says look down there's your gear going by the boat.the snake turns around with fish & unattached gear says look i caught it thats when i come unglued we exchange words he yells if you don't back off makes a motion to throw it in the water instead heaves it at my boat fortunate i have the net in hand (thinking he'll make good & give up the fish)snag the fish before it sinks in the water.the ironic thing he calls his company extream fishing adventures i'm sure he didn't get a tip by his less than amused client. The other was an aparent mistake as he was to much in a hurry to land a fish for his clients after seeing or hearing i was in the zone at least he said he was sorry.my experience with most guides has been very cordial & most work very hard so others can enjoy the thrill of sports fishing! lets all give each other a little room and help to land that fish of a life time and after all we all make make mistakes TIGHT LINES TA ALL[^]

big excitement when my friend had a big fish on..all of a sudden, the fish line spooled and got snagged by another boat's downrigger, got cut off as clean at Aldgride Pt in Becher Bay. My friend was disappointed and I encouraged him to catch another fish and not to worry. S... happens!

I have witnessed an a....le in different boat have cut off innocent fisherman's line with a spring on it in front of Harbour Quay during the peak chinook fishery. Not good. This innocent fishermen looked very upset standing in a small metal tin boat. Respect and true sportsmanship come first.

Last summer night, I had a spring on, a 25 ft Sea Ray boat came in at full speed reaching 35 mph, nearly mowed my fishing line along with a spring. close call...I netted the fish in. Really relief!

I was trolling outside quatsino sound, to the left past cliff point and was trolling towards another boat along the shore, but was about 50 yards away when we were port to port. He had a fish on, which i didnt notice until too late. It ran straight away from this boat towards me and caught on my downrigger before i could reel them in (manuals). I saw the fish actually caught on the cannon ball and netted the cannon ball and fish at once and brought it into the boat then did the turn of shame...

The guy was using heavy braided line which probably was why i didnt cut off his fish. He wasnt very pleased when i gave him his fish, but i was still glad i didnt cause him to loose it.

I have never lost a fish beign cutoff, but have probably had my gear snagged by someone cutting behind me 3 or 4 times in the past 2 years.

Great thread!
