How heavy are prawn traps?

Got bored at up at work and built a prawn trap in the evenings. Seemed like a pretty good idea at the time. Stainless steel mesh, light stainless tubing where I needed frame, and fine stainless screen for the two funnels. Seemed like it might get heavy so I made it smaller, fashioned after the old east coast wooden lobster traps, 24" long and a half moon 16" high by 16" wide. Still turned out to be 15lbs without the 5lbs of prawns I will be pulling up. You fellas figure I'll kill myself pulling this thing up 300'? Oh, the funnels are 8" tapered to 3" square openings on the inside, are these too big? That can still be changed.

Maybe it'll make a good lawn orniment...or bear trap.

Thanks Dog/Scotty, I figured as much about the pull. How about the funnel opening? Too big? I hung four rigid wires from the top inside the small end of the funnel to act like a check valve (going in), I think I saw that on another trap...or dreamt it.

By the way, Dogbreath, that was a great link. I am going to order one or those lifts, seems like the cat's meow.

If you find it doesn't catch many Prawns, get rid of the wires in the openings. I have an idea it will stop the bugs from getting in.
I would have gone with a nylon mesh to lighten the unit too.

boc,
Yep,I would've if I had it. I work at a gas plant up in northern BC and I was building it out've what I had on hand. I'm working on just a frame now, I'll get the nylon netting when I'm back on the coast. Thanks for the advice.

Trotac Marine in Victoria sometimes has webbing. I think it's old herring nets they cut up for people making traps. Sometimes they have the heavy nylon webbing and sometimes the lighter stuff. I think, go for the heavier webbing if they have it as it lasts much longer and resists wear.

Hey Dogbreath...the anchor lifters..can you pull ropes through them with knots (every 100 feet) or does it have to be continous rope? I was looking at one and didn't think it would work. Be nice to be able to let go of the ropes for a breather!

I can tell you that knots won't go through them at all.
But I built a puller for under $200.00.
I'll send you pictures if you want.

Probably around 60. Not the quickest but for pulling two traps on a line, it sure saves the back.
I will take some pictures and post tonight.
