How far do you run your gear behind your flasher ?

Should you follow what the recommended lengths on the flasher packaging ? Just curious to see what other peeps do

Those are just generalized averages.......for example they'll say (32 to 44 inches etc etc etc).

The rules have been broken all over the place on this subject..........and caught fish.

Effectiveness of leader length is governed also by:-

Boat speed

Whether you are going with, across or against the current

Speed Over Ground (GPS)

Distance of flasher from clip

I could post what I use.......but that's just me....you'll immediately get a whole bunch of post with different leader lengths.....

For me....generally (but not written in stone)

real bait:- 6 to 8ft

spoons :- 56 inches to 60 inches (except for Sockeye....those:- 27 to 42 inches)

hoochies:- 36 to 40 inches (back of flasher to nose of hoochy) ( I use 32 inches and a small hoochy when near a rivermouth in Aug/Sept)

Caught plenty of big springs later in the season on leaders 7-9 ft. when using anchovies. For spoons up to 4-6 ft., hootchies up to 4 ft. These longer leaders can help slow the presentation down.

one of my buddys slays springs on hootchies running a 22" leader. Hes a bit of an odd ball though

Half a fathom...or arm to nipple...or start long and shorten till it becomes magical.

And depends on weight of leader too.

I always just cut line at my full two arm reach it gets a little shorter with knots and a little cut off here and there. I do troll pretty quick maybe that's why the longer leader works better for me,

I run hootchies right hand to left armpit on ECVI. Same with spoons last year and caught a lot of coho like that. Should spoon leaders be longer generally for springs? On WCVI I go with hand to hand stretched out. About 6 ft.

I run hootchies about 30" from the flasher, sometimes as short as 24" sometimes as long as 36", always with 40# test so that the flasher can impart action to the hootchie. It seems to me that really long leaders to hootchies will lessen the action on the hootchie. Spoons, I run farther back as they make their own action.

in Sooke, fishermen run anchovies about 6` or 7` long from flashers...columbian springs love smackin` on anchovies!

I personally never run less than 7' leaders with chovie anymore.Back in the early 80's,I would run 5'ers with good success
and some highliners back then ran them as short as 44" and just killed em.Tried running them shorter again several times over the years with no success whatsoever.Having said that,I know of at least one great charter guy in Sooke
that still runs them short(around 5' I think) and slays them to this day,so the shorties must still work for some guys.
