How Do You Handle YOUR Algae on Your Line?

Personally I just pick it off as best I can while I'm actively fishing......but there's still lots on there when I get home. I tend to let it just dry out for a day or two and then wind it on to a spare reel until I've got it all off and then wind back.

Just wondering how you charter guys deal with it. You take a charter out in the morning, it's all gotta be off and ready for the afternoon charter....right?

or do you have so many spare rods w/reels that it isn't an issue....just swap 'em out?

But it has to come off sooner or later........so what do you all do?

Wholly f**K Sf, I admire your enthusiasm but maybe time to slow down on the doobie's!

If you keep tension on your line while winding it in whether its to check gear or at the end of the day it will ball up at your rod tip.
When it builds up, grab the rod with both hands and whip it down hard into the water once or twice. The algae will come off.
Takes a bit of practice but it does work.

yup... whip the tip in the water,,, damn whale snot!!!

Whip the tip and if possible use a damp cloth to run the line through.

I wish I had time @ home to do it-a freshwater soaked cloth works even better-but most of the time the reel is sprayed with fresh/left to dry and that's it.

JuandeOne:-.....???

Me not use Whacky Baccy......I find that when winding in, algae will ball up on the rod tip....but a lot will make it through before that. At home when it's dry, it comes off reasonably easy. Although time consuming and a pain in the rebuttal. Out on the water , when it 's wet and balled up, it seems to take forever to get the stuff off. I have zero patience for that kind of thing when I'm fishing.

I'll have to try the "whip the tip" method as others do.......

Yup. Make a small loop or 'U' in the line.pinch and pull..dry rag or paper towel. Must be dry though.

If you see it on your line, lay the line in the water with a bit of slack and then whip it upward, kind of a reverse whip effect. It clears the gunk off your line before it reaches the tip (or at least before more reaches the tip).

Agreed this is the best way.

Sorry to high jack your thread but I wake up this morning thinking we will have to find out how to get tar off our line soon.

No way! !!!!!! Best have a couple reels spooled with braided line with a 20' monofilament leader(cause braided line don't stay in the down rigger clips) braided line cuts right through algae and algae doesn't stick it..... It works

Ya right.....It sticks to my braided line in my riggers. Globs of the crap collects and falls off the main pulley and still some passes by onto the spool.
