Hootchie Rigging

Somebody posted this link on Craigslist Victoria. Very handy == several new tricks to try for rigging your hootchie. Gives all of us something to do over the winter months:

Good grief! [}:)]

You mean I finally get to hack up all the bags of old hootchies I have and use all those Apexes which I won't fish because fish are so scarce? They're going to catch fish now..I swear!

An Apex stuffed inside a Hootchie -- I like it!!! Kind of appropriate to the season where many US Thanksgiving dinners consist of a duck stuffed inside a turkey (a turducken). I think this is worthy of a shot, and if it catches fish -- will be named the Turducken-Hootchie. [^]

I got a similarly rigged lure from Catherine Forbes at Critter Cove this season. It allows you to rig an anchovy on a TNT lure to get some action. I didn't get a chance to put it in the water, but she reports that others have been using it with great success.

As for the hooks they are using - I like the look of them. Anyone know if the local tackle shops (Campbell River/Courtenay areas) stock them?

I have used hootchies over the small tomic spoons( they look like a larger version of the butterly head) for sometime ; they impart a really good pulse action to the hootchie skirt.

Great link-Thanks.

As to those hooks not sure if those are Matzuo or not, Canadian Tire carries the Matzuo and Yamashita a makes a similar model.

Great article-- the Apex skirt arrangement is a killer at times-- even outfishing chovies. I know only too well-- I was fishing chovies and my partner was fishing the Apex Skirt-- he out fished me 2 to one..... But then again-- next time it was MY turn! [^]

He uses the Matzuo hooks on his hootchies. This winter I've been using the Matzuo octopus sickle hooks on my hootchies and the siwash sickle hooks on my Coyotes. So far I have nothing bad to say about them. They are really sharp and I don't think I've had a fish come unbuckled since I started using them.

Another place to get those hooks is at

Good strong hooks that hold fish well. Not very easy for fish to shake loose or spit out.
Been using them for 2 years and love them.

Im going to give the apex one a try this weekend... so im just putting the apex in the hootchie then and running the leader out the nose?

I received a wonderful email from someone on the board here..

I just wanted to stop in and say hello. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Captain Downriggin's

I have 15# balls!

It is nice to see you Captain Downriggins on here. You have some great designs and I would be interested in purchasing locally if you could arrange a distributor on the island.

Let us know how you make out... this I gotta see... a "better" Apex? Suddenly an Apex which doesn't work nearly as well as it once did is going to work?

I wouldn't be surprised if it works...a hootchy actionizer helps...but a hootchy on an Apex?

Pictures of your "winning" combination please!

When rigging your hootchies do you find leader length makes a difference? I usually go 42" behind a flasher. I cant see the difference in action when using different length leaders? I don't know what to look for? I know spoons should wobble not spin and chovies should have a nice tight roll, but what should a hootchie look like?

thanks for the tips
