Hook Files

What's with Luhr Jensen hook files costing $20. They rust and go dull so fast these days. Why?

I have loved these files for years but I think it's time to change.

What do you recommend?

I just use a flat stone with a groove in one side.
cheap and works good on most hooks.
(not so good on Gammies as I think they are chemically sharpened.)

I use a regular chainsaw "flat file". Keep them dry and away from salt water and they last a long time. I usually store
them in a heavy zip lock bag in my tackle box. There only $6-$7 and at any chainsaw shop. Another good trick is to
tape 2 round files together and drag the hook in the groove formed between the two. This actually works great, but the
downsides are being more expensive, and harder to store properly to keep them from rusting. You can probably tell from
this post that I used to be a faller. LOL.

if your worried about it rusting just give them a quick shot of WD and dont wipe them off
most of it will dry up on its own and leave a nice protective coat behind

Yup, WD-40 or any type of penetrating oil.
