Hmx rods mooching or down rigging?

This subject had good input unfortunately in sooke fishing report so here goes I have two 11'6 hmx rods I've been using them for down rigging one broke while trolling and the other after a fish came out of clip (landed the fish by wrapping line around gaff). They were gifts so I took pictures and sent them to fenwick for ten bucks they replaced them but said the new ones have no warranty. The new ones are grey this time and the backbone part off them looks a little stronger. I know rods aren't supposed to be banged around in boat but every whack shouldn't weaken a rod to shatter. Should we buy more expensive trophy Titan? Or less its to bad I love the feel of these rodsimage.jpgimage.jpg

Or should I be buying rods for down rigging don't know why you would need a 11'6 rod for mooching

why would the new ones not have a warranty?????
I'd be looking for a different manufacturer if thats the case
I have shimanos and fetha styx 2 different rods and love them both, I also have a couple TFO downriggers that are my winter rods
never had an issue with any

I think these HMX are 10'6" rods, I've got one of the new ones as well as old 1263 and used them both as down rigger rods.
They seem fine so far.

I had a Trophy titan break last night. Bought it yesterday morning. Sitting in the holder, trolling along, fish bites, snap. Right in the middle, below the joint. It's at the dealer now, apparently they are going to call me tomorrow regarding replacement/warranty. Hopefully it is a one off kind of a defect, and I didn't just buy a POS rod.

I had 3 HMX and all 3 exploded on me, all were replaced free of charge. 2 of the replacements have exploded and were replaced with Shimano Techiums. Paul at Trotac told me that they do not sell the HMX's any more because of all the problems they have had with them. The other thing he said was to be careful when pulling them out of the downrigger clip that seems to be the time when a lot of them were breaking. Just reel them up as the downrigger brings the line up. I'm hoping that the Shimano's hold up better then the HMX's and just waiting for the final HMX to explode on me.

I had a Hmx break on me last week when a fish popped it off the release clip. I have replaced with a shimano convergance I hope it holds up a little better.

is this the rod that has blue in the eyes looked at buying a pair they are 219.00 a piece but sounds like same problem

This is a common problem with "pure" graphite rods. Blew up my 10' 6" HMX steelhead rod last fall on a big, fresh chum.
Trotac highly recommended the Shimano Technium ,as they are a graphite/fiberglass composite.Fished it hard for the
remainder of the season with no problems. One tough rod! I have to admit though, the HMX had a nicer action and feel
to it,and lighter as well, but I'll trade that for the extra durability of the Technium's any day!

I have had my 4 HMX rigger rods and 3 HMX float rods for three years with one issue, one of the float rods keeps losing eyes. Having said that it is Loomis from now on for our household.

TDR's all the way, got 4 9' heavy action 15 years ago when Trojac was at the breakwater, never had an issue. Beat the hell out of them and all for under $40 ea. Can't go wrong with them. Look really beat today, but if and when they get replaced, Trojac at new place will sell me 4 more.

Jeez ! You guys are scaring me ! I bought a new HMX to replace my 1992-era Penn that has caught countless large fish and I'm heading to Winter Harbour in a few days. Sounds like I should take old faithful as a back-up.

Roofus - yep thats the one. I mainly bought it because it was one of the cheaper rods that had actual aluminum reel seat nuts. I have to say, it holds the reel far better than the Fenwick Canadian Edition (or something like that - the red ones anyway). Fenwick Canadians and Islander reels do not mix. I really like the action on the Trophy ( I caught a few fish before it broke ), and I"m hoping it's just a one off defect.

I bought 2 of the new models for fenwick 10'6' hmx M1062MH-M rods from trotac in may and been out many time with no problems. I find they have great action and was in my price point.

I have been using the same HMX's for three seasons now and no issues at all? I don't bang them around at all because I'm aware of issues with carbon rods in general. They get used 30 or 40 days a year and probably close to half are offshore days and deep trolling. I do like the feel better compared to my Lami's I was using before........My two cents.

I think it bad when Trotac is not selling them anymore, and you guys are breaking them all the time...Pretty weak rod if you ask me... I have both rod shimano convergences and trophy xl 10-6 not the titan trophy xl ones...Truthfully they will probably break some day...But the Xl's really have lasted a very long time same as the convergences...When I see these new rods break so easy I question the quality/durability...Its different to have an epic battle with a hog and break it. But releasing from a clip those shouldn't break technique or not. Seem cheaply made...
Amen to that one High Five. In my view if a tool is too fragile and unreliable to do the job it is utterly useless. No matter what it "feels" like or how it looks.
I am a guy who goes for substance over style any day and these modern carbon fibre rods do not cut it. They are the "prima donnas" of the rod world and if you don't treat them with kid gloves as special devices they "sulk" i.e. they literally have a "break down" LOL. What's to like about that?
