Hippa bottom fishing

Several years ago fished with a guide out of Hippa. We went over to Skelu Bay for lings. Guide set us up with free spool Shimano mooching reels, we’d sit and free spool touch bottom and crank up a bit. I can’t recall the set up and want to try it again. Anyone have any thoughts on this type of set up and technique?

Lodge was in Nesto Inlet. I know it’s been gone since 2018 and I believe it was run by West Coast Resorts.
