High Tech Jigging

I overcome the depressing end of the salt season by online shopping for things I might need and may well lose in the basement gear piles before next season.
27 flat fall imitations weighing just over 3 kg for C$91.00 delivered. Arrived in about 12 days. I got 80,100,130g sizes. The glow is bright- probably radioactive and there is probably a 10 year old Chinese hacker using my Paypal to buy what she needs. Alibaba.

They are a good buy-but sure take your time wading thru the specs-especially rods and things like that. Also be careful about hook sizes-while they sometimes correspond to ours off-times they don't-handy to have several examples by the computor with a centimeter ruler to hand. Certainly kills a rainy day--I look forward to your next garage sale!!LOLL

Here are some hooks for your jigs. One of the pics on Amazon shows the sizing. #18 mean 18mm from hook point to shank.

I've been making dual assists with 2/0 octopus hooks for a year or so and my hook::land has gotten waaaay better. Might downsize the hooks to 1/0 for the winter, if not smaller. I like the idea of a single up top when there are a lot of smaller fish around. I'll tie a few up this winter and give 'er a go, but maybe on the smaller herring jigs and not the long needlefish.

what are you using for cordage?

I've got some leftover 150 lb braid from a sturgeon fisherman pal, but when that runs out, I picked up 30m of 80 lb braid from my neighbourhood store. The heavier stuff wouldn't fit in the eyes of the 1/0 hooks, so I wanted a slightly smaller gauge that would allow for smaller hooks.

Went out last night and came back with 2 hatch coho. One on the lunkerhunt jig and the other on a small heavyish jig that I got a PNT (less than 3” long). That was on my new slo pitch rod. Found the bait out deeper so tried to stay on it. Bait likes to hang out on the bit of a hump just off the island. Lost a couple nice springs and released some.
Certainly no shortage of humpbacks off Nanoose. It seemed no matter where I looked I could see whale sprays. Did see one come out of the water like a coho, huge splash.
I bleed the fish in the pod well now, works really well. Then into the insulated fish bag.
It’s going to blow SE for awhile now so it was good to get out before that starts.
curious how you like that new slow pitch rod. it’s the king kong, right? wondering mainly about the action. i’m looking for something with a more flexible tip section. i was playing with one at Gone fishing in courtenay but hard to tell he action in the store with no line and jig present

It is the King Kong slider. It’s my first slo pitch rod so nothing to compare to other than my other rods I used for jigging. I’d say that the the tip is sensitive and can feel most any light takes. Once you have a fish on it is a surprisingly strong rod for how light it is. That’s the other thing, this rod is way lighter than my regular rods. Makes jigging for any length of time much easier.

I forgot which rod you are running?
Was it the Westcoast?

My kids just love jigging, so I might be in the market for a couple more setups.
Need to have something to look for at the upcoming Boat Show!!

I have a pile of 250lb downrigger braid and these in 4/0 and 3/0. Plus all the other stuff that is down there somewhere. I know you guys like the double hooks on the bottom, but one rigged on top works for me most times.

What sort of length are you running on the top attach hook?
I am trying to picture how it would look on the decent with different lengths, but should probably just get back to work.

personally i run the West Coast Fishing tackle 6’3” jigging rod. max gram rating 200 grams . i love it a ton. absolutely no regrets. i have three of them and need a fourth. the reel seat on the amundsen is vastly superior and the eyes are designed to minimize tip wrap

The bottom of the curved part of the hook is about 2/3 of the lure body from the top. Easy to switch to different lengths or put a short one on the bottom with split ring pliers. I'm still learning, don't do it much, don't fish deep, not big into catch and release, and know where to find chinooks trolling and squiding. The 4 year old grandson enjoyed using this one for rockfish with some help.

i have little to no experience with top mounted assist hooks, so i shouldn’t chime in, but i’m addicted to this thread so i’m going to anyway. 😂
most of the local stores sell Shimano flatfalls or daiwa saltiga jigs. some of the local companies are also supplying jigs.

as we know, with this style jig; 90% of the strikes occur on the drop.
we are all basically playing catch up to japan who have been using this style of fishing for decades. they basically invented it. some of those dudes are fishing 800 plus feet!
they use a lot of knife jigs as well; which are usually long and skinny ( think point wilson darts)

these are usually jigged with speed upwards towards the surface and they are meant to be fished this way. top mounted hook rigs make more sense to me as it would hang towards the base as it is getting ripped towards the surface.
