What a concept, a commercial industry, and DFO spots out the fish, and tells them exactly when and where to fish for them...........hmmmmm

Just another nail in the coffin for the Pacific salmon. Unbelievable.
Does this insanity happen in the US (Alaska)? I know they don't allow fish farms, so just how stupid is the Canadian government anyway?

There is a commercial fishery for herring in Alaska.Commercial fisherman do the test fishing and the soundings...not DFO.

Doesnt really matter who does the sounding, but it is important that they have realiable estimates so that the fishery stays within the 20% or less of biomass of the stock.

For the record.. most of the sounding is done by seine boats on charter to DFO and virtually all the test fishing is done by fishermen , either under contract or by industry with DFO looking over thier shulders.

Last year the size of the spawners was small, it will be interesting to see what size they are this year. If they again are small, then it will put a real crimp on selling the roe that they do get. Might result in less that the maximum volumn of herring allowed from being harvested...which will make a whole bunch of salmon happy .

The herring in my mind have been getting smaller over the past FEW years...at least from what ive seen fishing them commercially. I remember a few years ago DFO reduced the allowable mesh size used for the gillnet fishery. It allowed guys to catch fish alright but they were small and it killed our price. Personally i think they need to review the herring fishery and consider possible closures like what have already been put into place on the west/central coast.

cheers

:( So let me get this right. Commercial boats do the test seines and sounding, but under DFO's watchfull eye. They are alloted 20% of biomass, how about a +\- 15%. That is potentially 35% of the current biomass.OOPS. Can the reason for the smaller than average size be the overfishing and depletion of brood stock? No rose colored glasses for me[8D]. DFO's record on estimates and management of OUR resources stands for itself.

PS Sorry for hijacking your thread Haverodwilltravel. I only hope there is some left over for you.:(

Test fishery the other night had big sets but very small fish. 17.5cm average. 19+ is what they want. Spotter plane was sent out at noon today. Havent heard any news on that yet. Still waitin...

Hi Klob. No problem. I'm going over tomorrow. Will give a full report. :)

Was cleaning out an old tackle box that hasn't been opened in years. I found an old set of buzz bomb instuctions from the mid to late 60's (when there was still fish.) At the very top of the page there's this interesting warning.

"If you want good fishing for yourself, your family, your friends and generations to come-do every conceivable thing in your power to prohibit the commercial taking of herring.

I am firmly convinced that herring in abundant quantities is the most important single factor in the sustaining of ALL sea life in the oceans of the Pacific Northwest. It's no use starting to raise cattle (hatcheries) unless you first are sure you have abundant fertile pasture and feed!"

Quote: Rex Field(invented the buzz bomb). Wise beyond the time.

Posted this one before. Seemed apropriate again.

I'm setting my priorities. I'm making time for fishing.

Well, I'm here but nothing else is. No birds like last week. No seals like last week. No boats anywhere.

I'm all....alone....boo hoo :D

P.S. no fish either

the commercial boats do test fishing here to they are on contract. as for payment I thought there was a ruling in the east coast that they weren't allowed to do that. It used to be the case. I know the test salmon fishery they now get a day wage, not a % of catch. I heard of some gill netters now using 48 49 mm nets because they now it's going to be small fish. 7-8 years ago they were using 58's.

That is a sure way to make sure that in the future the herring will get smaller, keep taking the bigger ones out of the gene-pool,leaving the smaller ones to procreate.:(:(
Don

Yes. It wud be great if they said no commercial fishing for 5 years.
