Have You Ever Done This?

Wanted to make a rig that rolls the hoochy.

Used a JDF head with a T-rex cuttlefish with the flap removed.

Put a piece of foam on the inside of the hoochy so the pin holds it in place.

However......my initial goal was to get the hooks inside the hoochy instead of outside.

But I run the risk of skewering the line possibly as it runs up through the foam.....

Maybe you've tried making a rig like this...and maybe you had a better way to rig the hooks inside, but still have the hoochy so it doesn't flop around and stays tight in the head.

If you have any input.....thanks.....

interesting idea (seems like a waste of the greatest lure ever made...but maybe a stroke of genius?)...could you not leave the pin out, run the line back in through the pin hole and through the hoochy's eye to the inside of the hoochy (spelled hootchie by Jack James?), then add a few beads and a hook as per normal?

DOF.....I have lots of those.......you'd be surprised how many you can find at garage sales....

and pawn shops....and thrift shops.....still in the package........for 50 cents.

I don't want add a lot of beads on this rig......I want to keep it as light as possible......

But yes I will try your idea......

.....somebody's got to do the experimenting........working by candlelight in an obscure corner of the basement, building and discarding rig after rig, until dawn breaks and the rest of the world arises from slumber.....

You might be right tho'...I haven't field tested this yet....and I want it to roll and not go "propellor" on me....so I might hang one single heavier hook out the back......

There has been a method used for years where you just take a hoochy and run the main "offset" coming out the front. To get a roll.

I have tried that method and it never worked for me personally.

I think the JDF head will give it a much better roll than using the method I just described....

This is what happens when you are retired and you are hiding from the wife to get out of doing house work........

Couple things.

First it's the bend in the bait that makes it roll not the teaser head so I'd be surprised if that rolls like a chovey as the hootchie has no bend.

Second why not run the line into the head through the 1st hole then instead of ducking it back out just thread it through the hootchie and tie your hooks on? You said you don't want beads figure out some system (toothpick in front hole?) to keep the line from sliding up.

Third JDF teaser heads suck (personal opinion) use rhyse Davis or krippled anchovy.

I picked the JDF head because it is big enough for the hoochy.

I have Krippled heads too.......they seem to be almost identical to the JDF head in size and shape.

But I only had the Green Haze head in JDF.

I figured a bigger head would impart more action than a smaller head.....

I think I can make a plastic insert that will add some bend to it......

Yes.......no doubt it will not behave quite like a tuned anchovy........but I'm looking to get some kind of roll out of it...
even if it's not quite the same as bait............:D

I am pretty sure it will roll.....the curved tang on the side of the head plus the offset pretty much equals the same area as an old strip "teaser" head.

The strip heads, there was no curve in the strip bait...everything just hung free..

But that just gave me another idea...I'll try rigging one up in a strip-teaser head........

I just though what about bullet roll teaser heads? They don't require much bend in the bait if your JDF head won't roll try a bullet roll out.

I have some "bullet roll" heads.....I'll take a look at "em.....thanks

That head is a little bit smaller than a Krippled or JFD.

But might be good for regular size hoochy or needlefish hooch.....cheers....

Here's one in a strip head......just comparing

Definitely enough "wing" on there to get a roll, even if it's just a tad bigger than the other heads.

DOF......it's not a waste....these hoochies work whether the cuttlefish flap is on them or not when fished normally...

This one it would be easier to get the hooks running through the inside of the hoochy.....I could drill an extra hole ahead of the eye so when I put the foam in and put a toothpick through it, it doesn't mess up the visual appeal......

I didn't need another project but that is intriguing -I think an insert in the hoochy body that will hold shape and is bendable to some degree could get that thing to roll. I was going out to the shop to work on some more LED setups and will see what I have.

I was thinking the same thing at lunch time lol.

I was asking the same thing last year tried it too. Its not heavy enough to get a good roll. The trick is to get enough weight on it and it will roll better haven't tried testing some thing new but for sure hootchie and teaser needs some weight added. It does look killer though.

The wife just looks at me and makes a circular motion with her index finger near the temple of her head.....

Here's one in a bullet-roll head......I put some foam in the front and then follewed witha reversed gumpucky and a couple of small beads for spacing. Stuck the hook out so it can rotate without kicking up all the tail-fronds.....

Ran the line up through the gumpucky and then around the outside of the foam and through the offset hole..

Didn't fray the line when I stuck the pin in.

Only fear now is that the chemical in the hoochy will eat the teaser head.....going to keep a close eye on it.......

Some guys paint, some guys spend thousands on hotrods, some guys build airplanes for megabucks.......

Me I just feed my obsessive /compulsive tackle disorder.........:p

Arima Arima.......what sort of weight would you add?

I was thinking because it was lighter there would therefor be less resistance and it would not be impeded.......

How heavy do you have to go?

An Anchovy doesn't weigh a heck of a lot really.......

I would be running these behind a flasher..........but I don't think I'm going the usual 6 or 7ft.

I'll put a Sampo up front of the leader and run them about 4ft maybe.

I've got lots of old Apexes......I could melt those down an bend them into an insert so they fit right inside the hoochy without having a chopped bastardised look to them....rework them with a little cutting, sanding and Dremel work...but then I might have to reduce leader pound test, which I don't want to do........

I can't see why the strip head wouldn't work.....

Pretty easy to add a little inconspicuous weight methinks........

Get your hands on the mini jugheads they were built for hootchies. I don't think they roll they instead give a side to side kick action. I should try mine out.
