hatchery clipped

Couldn't locate the old thread on this topic, sorry, but I beleive I or someone else started a thread last summer on reporting results of coded wire tags from returned clipped chinook

I just got one report back from JO Thomas. The fish was caught off the waterfall ( back side of Bowen Island )in July 09. It came from the Cowichan Hatchery on Van Island. Was a 3 year old. Not an American fish !! :D

Great, now they'll shut down that fishery too.

Hopefully that comment is "tongue in cheek" and intended to go with a wink ....I must say however you seem to find it quite easy ( and quick) to find a negative slant on this. Maybe on just about anything ?
....understandably DFO's overall poor handling of our fisheries has caused us all to feel vulnerable and untrusting of what they might do with certain information they attain. Lets hope that our returning of wire code tags in hatchery clipped Chinook is more of a positive action than a negative one. Lets also hope that those refusing to return the coded heads ( perhaps adrianna is one of those people) are not doing more harm by not returning them.

It's easy to be negative with this stuff as based on history DFO has used all info against us. But if the wire tags are not returned DFO only has the historical info to use to base closures on. It's important to return the tags so that DFO has the real data on whether a fishery should be closed or not. Not that many US bound fish caught off of Bowen or English Bay. Gabrioal is a different story !!!

Yeah, I truly believe that it's a double edged sword. It's the only true information that fisheries have to track stocks. It also leads to closures of large areas. It's a knee jerk reaction to poor management to begin with. That's just my opinion. We've hashed this out before.

And I do turn in my heads. I just wonder each time if it will be the last from that area.

So think its the only true information fisheries has and you dont want them to get it? Ya it sucks when your spot gets closed but that sounds like a selfish approach.

Kelly, I didn't say I don't want them to get the information, I'm just cynical about what they do with the info collected, especially if it leads to closures. I know there's lots of other valuable info gathered.
I have lost some of my major fishing spots, have you lost yours? How would you feel if the whole inside (and outside for that matter) were closed to protect Cowichan River Chinook? Because that was one of the options mentioned by DFO officials at the round table meetings last year. I fit has to be done, so be it.

Ok, that's my rant for a while. Sorry if I offended anyone with my personal opinions.

I'm sorry that you have lost some fishing spots. The problem is that the Cowichan Chunook are on the verge of being added to the SARA list because they are almost extinct. Maybe find a new spot where that stock doesn't congregate so they can have a chance to survive.

And there in lies the fisheries management dilemma. Area G troll and WCVI sport had a bunch of Cowichan CWTs in 2009. Cowichan chinook are notorious for showing up all over the place at different times. Here one year gone the next, there another ... etc. So if you follow the old policy of shutting down areas where cowichan chinook CWTs have shown up, you are essentially playing whack-a-mole and soon the whole coast will be closed.

The best outcome for improving Cowichan chinook is still a full blown production hatchery on the Cowichan and use the latest state of the art technology to get'er done.

We all need to lobby for that outcome.

I would happily support that initiative both with time and resources. I have access to both.

Sorry it came across as not wanting fisheries to get proper info because you didnt want to lose areas which isnt the right way to look at it.I have lost some of my spots aswell because of cowichan fish but understand the runs in bad enough shape it needs it. If it comes to closing the inside then so be it. Most inside flows could use the break. Hopefully it doesnt come to that.

PS i still havent got any heads back [xx(]

Actually its my understanding that while there are some Cap fish and other mixes of stocks pulled from the back of Bowen, there are apparently quite a few american chinook winter feeders off west Bowen Is., throughout the winter fishery.
