Halibut survey

Did anyone else get an e-mail from DFO asking you to take part in a Halibut sport fishery survey ? I am suposed to get a link with my access code later. Not sure what it is looking for

ya i got it... dont know what to think of it tho... does this mean all 4 licences in my house are going to get this hali-spam?

I enquired about this and was given this response to the halibut survey....

"It’s a DFO survey as a result of a SFAB motion for the department to collect information on the effectiveness of the annual halibut quota. The information will be used to evaluate options for halibut fishery regulations that will allow better use of the recreational TAC each year. Last year the recreational fishery didn’t achieve it’s TAC. The survey will be quick to complete, respondents will be asked to report on the number and details of their halibut catch as recorded on their licence (date location, size), as well as the number of halibut (but not details) retained by juvenile anglers (under age 16) living in their household."

Sounds reasonable to me.

been asked also by email... haven't gotten the survey email yet...

WELCOME.
You have been selected to complete a brief online questionnaire regarding your halibut catch.
If you did not keep any halibut, you are still required to complete the questionnaire.

When you purchased your 2013/14 BC Sport Fishing tidal water license, you agreed to provide information on your fishing activities to DFO when asked. By completing this questionnaire, you will help meet the shared responsibility, with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), to strengthen recreational fisheries monitoring and catch reporting programs in Pacific fisheries.

WHAT COUNTS?
The purpose of this questionnaire is to obtain information on recreationally caught halibut. Note: if you did not keep any halibut, we still need you to complete the questionnaire.

SOON YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL WITH YOUR PERSONAL ACCESS LINK to the online Halibut Catch questionnaire. This email will be sent by EKOS Research Associates next week. Reminder emails will be sent to those who have not responded.

Thanks all for taking the trouble to fill this Irec survey out.
Hopefully SFAB will get the data that they need to help plan our Halibut fishery in the future.
Two pieces of data that has been missing and is very important is:
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:DoNotOptimizeForBrowser/> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]-->- single vs. multi-day angler boat trips
- annual limits

It is hoped that with this information DFO/SFAB can refine the tables that we use to help us decide the rules for this fishery. It's up to us to help out where we can.

We need accurate numbers to make accurate allocations that will help determine the length of the season and the number and size of fish we can retain. Anyone who has complained about the halibut limits and season restrictions in the past, this is exactly how we can help avoid unwanted changes in the future. The only way we can convince governments to make changes is to have accurate data, and the more people who participate, the more accurate it will be.

So to get more limits and etc do we put 0 on retention??? cause if they see we are not catching them will they give us more???

Last couple of years sitting in ALL these meetings telling us how much we take and over 350 boats on the water everyday even on +20 kt winds and only 12 halibut tides in 19/20 in (may) cause they fly over and count 175 boats one day then double it and tell us thats the amount of boats on the water...for the whole month ....hmmmm i dont know....

If you don't provide them with real data they will keep using their fairy tale stuff. That is the choice!!!!

filled it out.. at the end there is a comment box to fill out.. my comment went like this... WE NEED MORE TAC... also no reason for any conservation discussion when fn and commie or rich folk can catch the big ones.

X2. Everyone is quick to complain when SFAB has to use data provided by DFO to make decisions around how to best divide up available TAC but no one seems to want to get involved in providing accurate data. We are in a catch 22 situation, I agree on that, but unless we step up to provide reliable data nothing changes.
