Halibut restrictions + salmon closures = zero tourism !

Kelly,

READ my posts again, do I sound like a MEAT FISHERMEN ? Hardly ....... I ask for and have suggested some things that would give us that DO NOT live on the island more of an opportunity to actually take a couple fish home WHILE SPENDING HUGE CASH HELPING TO KEEP TOURISM ALIVE on the Island. I am one of thousands and thousands ........ yet your comment about "meat fishermen " and "if it's all about going home with something" "go to the STORE" YOU MUST BE DAFT! I have made comments with concern for the THOUSANDS that have been affected by these regulation changes and WILL BE MORE affected because of STUPID RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE SFAB and DFO and this government not SEEING THE ENTIRE PICTURE ......... if YOU KELLY are in the tourism industry in regards to our West coast FISHERY ........... GOOD LUCK !

Man there are some real DINOSAURS ON HERE !

I travel to the ISLAND ONCE, CASH IS NOT OVERFLOWING OUT OF MY JEANS, I spend THOUSANDS on my recreation yet am deemed a MEAT FISHERMEN .......... well if I ever return, because of the new REGULATION ....... I'll really be helping out the halibut fishery killing a big BREEDER NOW WON"T I .......

PLAIN AND SIMPLE DFO, SFAB and GOVERNMENT DO NOT look at the FULL PICTURE ........ WHERE WILL THESE MANY that depend on the SPIN OFFS OF TOURISM BE WITHOUT TOURISTS !

Again ......... PATHETIC of many !

HT

Why are you blaming the SFAB for your fishing opportunities? Do you attend SFAC meetings? Do you even know what they are about and what they do for us sportsfisherman?

Oh another question are you a member of the BCWF?

I'm not slamming you. Just asking is all:).

I was going to write a post apologizing but re-reading your first post I frankly don't. Im sick of these whining threads.

1.Yes you have to pay a lot to take a ferry to an island? BC ferries lost millions in the last quarter they have to charge you for costs unless BC taxes everyone more and makes the ferries provincial. Either way your paying for it so why complain. The CEO is paid a lot but he is overseeing a multi multi million dollar business so unless they hire someone unqualified, or they make it provincial (where again you will pay for it) he will continue to be paid a lot. Yes it sucks but its the way the world works.

2.As i already said losing one halibut (you could still keep a chicken for this lost fish) should not be the decision maker for a trip. After all you work for and invest your really going to change your mind over one halibut? This sucks i agree but there are way to many other things that you should value over a lost halibut.

3. Salmon are closing in the JDF which again sucks but again there are other ways to adapt. Why not change locations on the island to an open area? The island is huge.

So in my mind if you have a few road bumps then throw your hands in the air and give up then you really don't value the trip that much. If you do value it then why not find a way to make the trip? You will likely have a blast. If thats how you really feel, I respect your decision but don't come on the board posting woe is me, you guys are screwed. What did you expect as a response? Us all agreeing that its not worth a trip? Take up golf? I plan to make a career in the tourism industry later and it has certainly taken a hit but the passionate will survive. Your tourism dollars will be greatly missed and the dollars of others will be missed but as stated the Island is a paradise for many. One hali or two, closed areas or not there will still be people that value it enough to invest their hard earned cash and make the effort to experience it.

Answers,
Member of the BCWF = YES

Attend SFAB meeting = Yes when possible, the Dinosaurs there have tunnel vision, yet I have been a supporter for to many years to remember.

Letters sent to MP's and MLA's, DFO fisheries etc.

I can only travel to the Island once ...... a 4 to 6 day trip ........ may not even be able to get off shore due to bad weather. Guess I'll be killing a HUGE BREEDER to make many of you, DFO and SFAB happy ....... VERY narrow sited indeed.

Suggestions again ......

GO Barb-less, nothing bigger then 50 to 60 lb. 3 poss, and 2 per day. Mandatory License , 5 to 10 MAX PER LICENSE, (JUST TO KEEP the Locals happier),SIZE RECORDED ON Lisence, mandatory return of license to DFO.

THINK ABOUT IT AGAIN ..... Is killing 2 - 25 to 30 lb's better overall then a BREEDER and a chicken? ...... DUH ??

For those that can't see the DAMAGE THIS WILL DO to TOURISM ........ get your heads out of the SAND. I wrote this thread to Support the FAR TOO many affected by these narrow minded decisions.

HT

Thanks and point taken. I have talked to few guide buddies and they say there bookings are actually up a bit this year. Like Kelly pointed out there are folks that will come regardless for the experience. I personally don't agree with the slot limit for the vary reasons you pointed out. I don't see it making a difference except yes folks will be targeting the bigger fish for one of the days. That is something that I hope is only for this year as well. Time will tell. In the mean time all we can do now is ask for more transparency for future decisions through the SFAB and keep attending those SFAC meetings.

This whole thing is a big mess but I hope it has opened the eyes of the JOE fisherman and I hope more folks get involved through the process and political means to help make a difference for the future.

Thanks for putting your feelings out there. Your not alone for sure.

Cheers,
John

Nobody questioned it will hurt tourism and I don't see how this thread supports those affected? Those most affected will be those in the tourism industry (guides, campsite owners ect ect) and this thread did the opposite of support them. You basically said so long your screwed. If you wanted to support those affected this thread would have said "I know things are rough but I'm still going to come enjoy myself and support the industry" which you didn't.

Yes i might be coming across as an butt here but like i said enough is enough. Venting here and there is fine but its got out of hand.

It's is out of hand by the selfishness of alot of post's. HT talks about "his trip" and the thousands like "him". Well I sure don't see thousands of posts like HT's on here. I have many friends and family that come out to the Island every year and they sure DON'T share HT's opinion.

Venting is good for the soul HT. I hope it helped "you". How did your vent help any of the fishery matter's at hand? Just proving a point that most are well aware of already. Thanks for that.

Well it's with sadness that I am done with my TOURISM DOLLARS going to Vancouver Island! For too many years to remember I have been hauling myself, countless friends and family to the Island along with my Many boats over the years

HT

I'm sorry you feel this way but what if your vacation was for August? If it was 1 and 2 any size then there was a very good chance that halibut would be closed by the time you got here.

Or are you just pulling my leg about your vacation so you could slam SFAB?

Kelly, this is pretty funny, and I think part of what people dislike/disagree with. We had to pay millions to a "professional" to oversee the ferries re-building the terminals poorly, so we could spend millions fixing them, and lose millions. But that's the way the world works...

This attitude sucks. Because something has been/is done a certain way doesn't mean that's the way it needs to be.

Hahn was paid millions, to turn a "profitable" service into a money loser, with possibly the highest paid staff in the country, and leave it with a huge debt, deficit, and a $300,000+ pension. Go figure. But I guess that's just the way the world works so we should bend over and take it?

Yea your right .... but this guy is a BSer and I'm (we) not letting off the hook.
He posts in the Vancouver thread as a guide and seems to have an abrasive tone.
Stir the pot with BS and Kelly calls him..... I'm back'n kelly on this one.

You're right that was poorly worded. My point was there will always be a cost to taking the ferry and that needs to be accepted. You guys are both dead on however, in that it should be better run service. It sucks they run it as a business and when they flop we foot the bill.

Sorry to disagree but the ferries have NEVER been profitable. Heavily subsidized, yes but profoitable, no.

A very interesting/sickening read:

Connecting causes to Chinook Salmon stock collapse.

" If you want to believe habitat loss is the primary impact and completely ignore these lethal chinook salmon viruses - I can't help you. If you want to take a stand on these viruses I will do everything I can to give you the evidence that viruses from salmon feedlots are killing wild salmon. I suspect this will not reach public understanding and action until it is publicized in a manner that is far beyond my means and expertise. I am up against an industry spending millions on advertising, a federal government bent on selling farm salmon to the world and a provincial government that is so out of touch they don't realize they are the landlords of this industry. They could simply stop leasing our major migration routes to this industry. All the evidence is clear, we will lose our wild salmon if these viruses continue to pour over them every time they pass Campbell River."
