Halibut Reels

I'm running a pair of Penn GLD's , a little older but hold up very well. They have a lot of Hali under their belts and are still performing great!

my absolute fav reel for halibut is a daiwa 600h sealine.
add some of the 5+1carbon fiber drags for 28 a kit and they pull 50 lbs of drag if you want. I literally can crank up a 15 lb cannon ball with the reel..
very quick retrieval. can find them all the time on ebay for 50-60 bucks

Has any one used a knuckle buster for halibut? I don't likeep any of the level winds that we have so I ran a 6" Peetz and at 250' didn't have any trouble retrieving. All I caught was a dogfish and a big octopus so I can't say what a big hali would feel like. I much prefer reeling in with the rod facing forward as opposed to upside down. I do have a buddy who still jigs hali by hand in the Charlotte's. That sounds crazy to me.

It's not a knuckle buster, has a clutch on the handles so they won't turn when fish runs and one way drag.,I've been using 725 Alveys for years now. Their dead simple and hang below rod and never wobble. I use 80 lb. power pro braid on them.I don't know why anyone would want a geared reel for halibut,I've caught lots and never had one run towards me.

56 lb'er on the line....

initially we thought it was snagged on bottom, for 10 mins, we couldnt get an inch. was about to cleat it off and break it free when we felt a few head shakes

I spool them with 1000ft of 100lb braid, over 1000ft of 60lb test mono for an inexpensive backer

the 400h are also a good size, a little smaller

I use the 725 reel (7.25 inches) ,has 1 way drag and clutch on handles. The Australia website calls them "boat reels" and they come bigger or smaller, but I recommend the 725 model for halibut.About $240 delivered from Australia and about a month wait. If you hate the wobble of a top mount reel like me you'll be happy with the Alvey.

I got a 50 lb hali last year at Winter Harbour on a salmon setup, was bored waiting for a bite whilst on the hook so I decided to jig for something to do. Reeling in hali with an MR2 isn't too bad, because the 1:1 gearing helps against a bigger fish. It was the 10'6 rod that was a pain, just not made for that kind of fight. Rod tip was bent into the water the entire time.

I found a used one on ebay from Washington for $60 USD and ordered it. It is a big reel - I can't wait to try it

Great reels, we used them in Australia while on several charters for bottom fishing

How about some opinions on tackle too?

I've been Snelling some 9/0 vmc permasteel octopus hooks with some 100lb mono while watching tv in the evenings

Quarter for size comparison

EDIT*** looks like i ordered the wrong size, previous years hooks were 10/0 not 9/0

Looks good, I mostly just run 1 big circle hook, but I like the tandem set up if you're fishing with herring, you can rig it up really nice with the tandem hook setup.
