Fished off the waterfront, and the gravel pit. I can report that I landed my first dogfish of the year:(

Buddy and I went out hali-fishin' for the first time; both of us are virgins.

Was thinkin' of heading over to Albert Head so we launched at Pedder, but when we got to the ramp French-guy working in the office advised that we might want to work Whirl Bay where it's more protected from the N.E. gales that were supposed to materialize midday.

Short version: We bottom-bounced (Power Bait's) every square inch of Whirl Bay and not so much as sniff from a doggie, a cod, or a used condom, let alone a hali.

Looks like I'm going to have to get an anchor-package set-up for hali. I'll do a search on here to see if there's some more info on how to set it up and use it - safely.

Hey Little Hawk, It looks like I'm in the same boat as you. Don't have a lot of experiance fishing for hali's. I was talking to a guy last year and I told him I was catching small Sole from Whirl Bay so I thought I would try fishing for hali's in the bay. He said " No hali's in whirl Bay cause they eat sole." What do I know....lol. I did however manage to catch a hali from the Trap Shack. Last summer I was out fishing for salmon when I found some feed right in tight to the Trap Shack so I started doing dougnuts trying to stay on the feed and thats when a nice little hali (23lbs) took my chovie. Does that mean a guy can fish right at the Trap for hali's??? again.... I don't know....lol. I want to try anchoring somewhere and try my luck at it but without ever doing it before it would probably be a good idea to find someone who has done it before and go with them the first time. Steve.

There are hali's all along the shoreline, you can probably find them just about anywhere, but in that area if you just want to bottom bounce, I would run closer to Secretary or the bluffs. You may be able to bottom bounce West Race Rocks on an ebb tide outsite the 120ft boundry, there is a good halibut fishery there. Bottom bouncing the trap shack would be terminal on gear, and it's not really considered prime hali turf anyway..

I picked up quite a few halibut last summer trolling bait
and hootchies right on the bottom.
Oakbay, waterfront and Constance all produced.
nothing big, but a 40lb halibut on salmon gear can be fun !
;)

How deep do most guys anchor when they fish for hali's. And... when anchoring for hali's .... lets say your in 200 feet of water..... do you only put out just enough rope to let the anchor and chain sit on the bottom or do you let out extra rope say another 100 feet and back away till you set the anchor?
