Halibut harpoon or shark hook?

I have both however I found the shark hook to be brutal on the side of my fiberglass boat......... when holding onto a struggling hali....:(

Good info. I've been wondering about this myself. What size shark hook do you recommend? Retain the barb I would imagine?

I like to harpoon them and let the guys on the boat hang on to them on the rope! It's pretty fun, the guys get a real kick out of that, plus the rope's tied off to the boat in case they can't hold on. Bleed them out in the water with a nick to the gills/tail. Stone cold when you bring them in, no muss no fuss. Haven't lost one yet that way, and everyone likes busting out the 'poon, it's a good way to go. For the small guys just gaff em and tickle them once they come in (or tickle them with a good beating, that settles them down too).

Note the "tee" handle I had welded on the shank of the shark hook

It really helps to sink the hook ..

any of you ever consider the use of a 'bang stick' on hali??

Nope. But I do have a set of Buddies that live in Anchorage I've fished with on a few occasions. Ex-marines and crazier than loon-chit. They open up with a 45 automatic on every single halibut that comes up regardless of it's size. Certainly "pacifies" them quickly!! :D

Another vote for the 'carry both' strategy. Most halis over 50 get the stick and buoy and the shark hook is real nice for getting control of the larger ones heads and dragging them over the gunnel. Getting them in the mouth gives you pretty instant control of a butt that is already a bit winded.

OK I bought both today. Picked up a Peetz harpoon for $74.00 and a Shark hook for $7.50.
Both new. Was that a good price?
