Halibut harpoon or shark hook?

What do most of you use at the boat to secure a halibut?
I've seen a harpoon used but also a larger shark hook attached with a length of chord that is tied to the boat.
I'm leaning to the shark hook as a harpoon is kind of pricy for a few yearly trips as opposed to weekly .

If you are serious about butt fishing you will inevitable get both. The sharkhook is great for fish under 50lbs, but anything bigger-- especially over 75lbs you WILL need the 'poon.

Why is that cuba i've shark hooked a few haly over 200lbs with no prob at all.

They both have there place i find on anchor a harpoon works better because the fish come up flat in the tide but when drifting they come up head first mouth open most of the time hard to harpoon that way but very easy to stick a shark hook in there yap job done.But i would tie it to a float not a boat.

Shark hook for me with 15ft of line and a couple of bumpers. Hook it and then let it run/freak out. The floats will bring the fish back up if it dives plus you still have the hooks in the mouth. Remember though to release the drag on your reel cause when the fish takes off so could your rod. I would not tie the fish off to my boat ever. As you could have the poon or hook rip out of the fish and end up lossing it. Any thing under 100lbs comes on board right away on my boat. When I long lined they came on board right away no matter how big they were.

Don't ever be to afraid of the halibut or you will end up like a fellow I know hog tying a 12lber and straping it to the swim grid.

i LIKE TO HARPOON THEM WITH 15' OF ROPE TO A BUOY ONCE THEY GET OVER 50LBS. AS SAID, LOOSEN DRAG ON ROD AS THE HARPOON STRIKES AND SEE HOW LONG THE HALI CAN SINK THE BUOY. HELPS WEAR EM OUT FURTHER. I ALSO LIKE TO BLEED THEM IN THE WATER ONCE WORN OUT AND TIED TO CLEAT. NEVER TRIED THE SHARK HOOK THO? 5 DAYS TO GO TILL HOPEFULLY THE POON IS STABBIN!

Its like I said ..get both.... especially if you only get out every now and then. Do you REALLY want to risk losing that monster because you saved a few bucks by not buying a harpoon??? If so--- carry on......

Ditto on the "carry both". I do always, and though more prone to use the harpoon (tethered to a float) the hook very much has it's place at times.

I use shark hook for all my hali's.

Cuba, I have not caught one big enough to use the poon. Maybe I will test it out on one this year.
