Halibut closed until 28th Feb?

Weird, usually regulation changes including opening's are posted after the IPHC meetings are over.
There it is though in red and white.

Walks like a duck quacks like a duck guess what its a *****....
Yes we are and will get screwed ove ronce agin but I REALLY think the coalition and us writing letters has really got there attention keep up the good work keep writing even to say . something short like . and ask what are you doing this to us this isnt fair..

Good luck Wolf

Sons of $!@#&%

Time to ramp it up. Like get every single person you know to send a letter even if you have to write it for them!!!

my letters are already in, will wait and see if they do a 1/1 on the 28th, and if so, write another WTF set of letters....hell even 2/2 deserves a WTF as the only logic would have been to push the open to March or April to give a full summer fishery at 2/2...heaven forbid that DFO would be 'logical'

I would be very surprised if was anything but 1/1 with a Feb 28 opening.
Once they reduce the catch/possession limit it seldom goes back, especially with the TAC reduced from last year.

Your right there Scott, just like the barbless hook rule never to go away, once they have admitted fault and they go the wrong way the tend to try and sweep it under the rug.....

gotta wonder what the point is of sending letters into the newspaper when they drastically change your message. Mine got posted today in the TC and it was titled 're: halibut allocation balanced' letter on the 22nd...I started out my letter by saying 'what is balanced about 88% and 12%?'...they turn the headline into greed again (sport fishery needs bigger share??? WTF?) Didn't include the part stating it has nothing to do with conservation as IPHC has done a great job taking care of the biomass.

They got most of the general message after, but I'm pretty choked on that one.

Posting the opening date is good in one sense, for at least business can now move forward for the early season. However it also gives DFO a clear indication of our mood by doing so when we post our thoughts in open forums. ;)

Ding Dong!

We dont even know if it will open on the 28th for all we know on the 27th of feb we will look and it will read closed until june 1st. This is a freaking nightmare!

IPHC meets jan 24-28. i assume the final quotas will be made public at that point in time. down this way WDFW meets feb 11 and sets the bad news in stone.

Time to take a few Status Folks we know out fishing!

What a complete bunch of F in Bull $%$*...

Once BC gets a bad name from cancelled bookings due to more in season closures and words like poor Halibut stocks we are doomed. They will go else where. It will take years to recover on a tourism level and many a fishing based, business & community will suffer the ill effects for many years to come. I have regular guys from the UK and Germany asking WTF is going on? Are the stocks that bad? Brutal.

I just can`t believe the multi billion dollar tourism industry that Sportsfishing generates is just not important!

Yes Sportsfishing, Guides and Lodges take out Sportsfisherman who purchase recreational licenses, the majority local from BC & Canada. To class Lodges and guides as commercial is outright insane.

Brutal.

i'm going to send fisheries a invoice for 5000$ cause thats what i just lost because of the late notice and i know there's a few other guys in the same boat.

Wouldn't sting nearly as bad if we knew a month or so ago!

Wrong posting, DFO staff put the wrong info out..
Who knows when it will open.

Or the natives take over the guiding business, similar to the commercial salmon sector. It's probably been talked about. Then the native sells the fish to his guests for the negotiated price. Now that would be a war.

Here are some key excerpts from the fisheries act;

Aboriginal Fishing Rights - Section 35(1) Of The Constitution Act, 1982
Section 35(1) of the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes and affirms the existing aboriginal
(non-treaty) and treaty rights of the aboriginal peoples of Canada. This provision has
been given a broad and liberal interpretation by the courts. In applying section 35(1), the
courts have indicated that the food fishing rights of the aboriginal peoples have priority
over other uses of the resource. Such rights are subject only to its reasonable regulation.

The practice which was induced and driven by European influences does not qualify for protection and priority as an aboriginal right.
