Halibut Allocation

I wonder what the response from the lodges here would be if we choose to close a couple days mid week
I guess that’s the big question. I certainly don’t feel we need to operate solely on what’s best for the lodges. I appreciate they need consideration. Doesn’t America have lodges?

As long as the US is the commercial fleets main customer, this tactic will continue to be used. This is the starting point, next year they will want additional concessions. As a start make Americans buy commercial quota to fish here! Wonder what percentage of the Recreational catch they take. Let them fund the commercial fishers their government is trying to screw!
USA is not waiting till 2027 they have called Canada back to the meeting table in June trying to get 2027 settled now before next years IPHC meeting.. :(

Did I read the minutes right where the US had 3 Reps voting and we only had 2 due to one of ours being absent? At some point do we just walk away?

USA is doubling down as predicated ... Ottawa needs to be present in this Not only the commissioners
Midterm victories needed?

Nuclear weapons needed. That seems to be only thing the Americans right now will back down from with countries that have them.

Not looking forward the Pacific Salmon Treaty. That will be ugly.

seen a post from SFI saying it should be the same or slightly better then last year. As even with the overall reduce Quota, Rec still was way under last year

Hi Everyone

Does anybody have any updates or information on the upcoming halibut season, regulations, and quotas?

Commercial opening scheduled for March 26, recreational has not been announced.
Might have to wait till May this year. ?

I attended the “Greater Victoria Spring 2026 Sport Fishing Advisory Meeting” as an observer. There I found out that there was OVER 100,000lbs of unused Halibut quota for recreational Fishers last year. I also learned that during the bilateral Canada/USA halibut commission talks, that the USA purposed a 14% total quota reduction (commercial & recreational) for the 2026 season and insisted that Canada shoulder 100% of the reduction or USA would ban the importation of Canadian Halibut from entering the USA. In the end Canada took a 7% reduction USA took none, which in the end translates to a 7% reduction in our recreational quote.

Take aways. 1) Washington is a blue state, but Trumps henchmen still run the show.

2) Let’s find new markets for our Halibut and Sea Food. On that note, during a four-day Marine First Aid course I attended last month my partner was a commercial Fisherman. He told me that fishing was great and that 100% of there catch went to Costco in California.

3) Why the hell did DFO raise the Herring Quota to Commercial fisherman last year. Hmm I guess Commercial an Recreational Fishers don’t mind catching puny Salmon and tiny limits so Gardeners can have a plentiful source of garden fertilizer. If we had a moratorium on the commercial herring fishery for five years Tyee would be common again.

I am not a DFO hater. They’re not perfect, but I think they are doing their best, under funded as they are. A little organized guidance (protest) from the recreational fishers would go a long way in changing things.
