Is anybody "in the know" about the 2012 season ?

It will open late, close early, 1 per day 2 in pesession.
But you knew all this already. Do we really need another one of these threads? It's not open until DFO announces it is open some people might get a week or so heads up but nobody including the DFO can give you open close dates for certain at this time. I would guess March - Labour day but I think that is what it was last year so it will probably be even shorter April - Labour day maybe? I wish they would open it Feb01-Jun30, closed during the summer then open again Sep01-Dec31.
That would be a perfect schedule for the south island and would reduce the rec catch huge because all the summer lodges/charters wouldn't be banging on hali's for 2 trips per day. The lodges can get salmon in the summer and hali's in the spring/fall. I bet by cutting out those two months the rec sector could be open the rest of the year. I bet mose rec anglers would vote for that too... it would just be the lodge/charter operators who might not.... hmmm something to think about.
Or even a pulse fishery like the prawns open Feb01-Feb15 and closed the 2nd half of the month. Carry that on March-December. That would save us huge quota too it's mostly the summer charter/lodge operations that sucks up our quota not the true recreational fisherman who wants to pull the boat out once or twice a month to try to catch a hali.
Or they could tackle the real issue and change the 88/12 split but I can't see that happening for the 2012 season.

That would shut down the entire lodge industry for anything to do with Halibut.
