Today the dogs showed an unusual interest in one of the small freezers I have in my shop...... sniff, sniff --- I could smell it too... Oh oh... sure enough one of the freezers had stopped running. The vac sealed fillets of 4 sockeye and one chinook thawed out and warm. What was stinking was the packs of prawn and crab bait I was planning to use this winter. Damn-- but my other freezers are still good so I only lost a relatively small portion of the winters grub. Double checked the panel, the cords etc-- and yes... it was the freezer that crapped out.

If the weather gives us a break I am GONE!

Sorry to hear that. At least it was not 600 lbs. of moose meat.

I also have two smaller freezers plus the side by side freezer with the fridge, the idea being not to have all your eggs in one basket. After 10 years or so we should probably buy new ones but few of us do. It is like we are waiting for them to fail before we get a new one.

Sometimes if you lose a lot in value to freezer failure or young children unplugging them your home insurance will cover the loss – take pictures and add up value and if well over deductible consider a claim.

Had a friend have a trades person unplug their freezer for a power tool and it ended up costing the window replacement company a few hundred bucks to replace the food.

It would be nice if an aftermarket manufacture could come up with an 9 volt battery alarm system like a low cost smoke or water alarm system that would go off when the freezer goes above temperature or if freezer manufactures built this in as a factory option. The 9 volt water leak detection and alarm systems I have only cost $11.00 each when I got them from Home Depot.

I have two other freezers.. a 19cf that I bought 7yrs ago when I decided to replace my old Sears freezer that was 31 yrs old!!!! No such thing as energy efficiency back then. The other is a apartment freezer that has all my whitefish in it.... that would have really hurt if that one had failed. I would think a power interruption alarm would be a great idea--- going to check Google...

Found this power interruption alarm-- looks good, but does not help if the freezer motor quits... http://www.amazon.com/CSH-Incorpora.../dp/B0016P7ERK/ref=pd_cp_hi_1#customerReviews
