Great Lakes Salmon Fisherman.

So the GL guys like their Penns and what not because they have "a much faster retrieve" than a westcoast knucklebuster...

Now this could be an advantage when the fish is running toward your boat and you have to get all that slack in quick....

I know there are different retrieve speeds on different models of those kinds of reels they use.....

Anybody here use them and notice a marked difference in retrieve speed compared to knucklebuster?...

wow BC guys saying something positive about onterrible :) The lake ontario salmon fishery is amazing but something that is overlooked is the lake erie rainbow fishery. 30 to 40 fish days are an absolute posibility, ive seen it. but it is fishing and some days are better than others. The rainbows are on crack here it seems like they are out of the water more than in it. I am lucky as the guys i fish with actually stop the boat and you can fight the fish. we also use reasonable gear but to each their own. The ontario gov does re invest in the sports fishery for sure but like all gov agencies these days they are strapped for funding and a lot of hatcheries have closed I used to work in the private aquaculture industry here and still have college buddies who have stuck it out with the gov. Much of the funding from fishing licences gets siphoned off into other non natural resource projects...again inside info. We here can thank ohio for the stupidly great rainbow fishery we have as they do most of the stocking and the fish migrate to our side of the lake in mid june to aug. hmmm what else .....the lake st clair musky fishery is crazy good as well. we have had 10 musky days with about half our fish coming off planer boards. its not something we do a lot of cause Id rather catch a bunch of 2 to 4 lb smallmouth again personal preference. I read this board a lot and most everyone agrees that your dfo needs help. I wish there were politicians that had big enough balls to stand up and say enough, this is the problem and this is the cure and this is whats going to happen. I think Im living in a fantasy land though thinking that this could happen. anyways cheers from ontario and I just wanted to say I love this board and the hunt bc board as well.

Wicket, are you saying that GL Salmon are a Provincial thing? If so, that would be scary in BC. Yes, DFO are mandated to look after our salmon, and we know that many of us don't think they do a good job, but I'd hate to see what the province would do, at least with the current party in charge.

I dunno J...

As far as I understand the lake fishery is a joint provincial/US management..

Look at what DFO does here... They have a huge mandate, poorly run department and seem to only have interest in keeping the people in Ottawa employed.

holmes is right it is under MNR. The DFO has a huge job managing everything that swims sits or floats in the ocean. First nations fishing is a hands off situation here. The thames river drains major area of south western ontario watershed. The amount of cage dip nets, roll nets along the banks is staggering that belong to the indians. Just one of the reasons the walleye run that used to be substantial in in tough shape. Just like anywhere ...you can buy fillets from them just about anywhere along there. I hold no resentment towards them but I am a big fan of one set of rules for every Canadian.
Personally I think that the ontario MNR do a decent job with the resources they have. What does burn my butt is the low fines that are levied against commerical guys that fish over their quota of perch or walleye. Im not sure how this problem is dealt with out there but the concenses here is that the fines are a joke. One commy that was 3500 lbs over on yellow perch got an 1800$ fine, 4th offence. kinda makes you shake your head. I know of an ice fisherman who was fishing with his buddy. They were walking in off the lake, got checked, and had 102 perch. the limit is 50 each or 100. they were wrong no doubting that and were each fined 150.00$. that is 300$ a pound. Thats what gives people a red butt around here.
