Government over management

I thought we better start a new thread about government over management.

This has been going on for quite some time with various parties. The problem is, all their past job postings are catching up to us now. We are paying for it now.

THE POLITICAL FAVOURS are the job's created. They did sweet pizz all. The good business's of this great Province created job's.

I'm guessing the WAY over managed BC Ferries is a result of these political promises gone way out of control. I heard from a ferry employee that the smaller run ferry routes where managed by two individuals with two assistants each, for a total of 6 people back in the 60's........what has changed? there are over 52 people now looking after these routes with huge real estate investments as well for office space etc.

Multiply that by how many other sectors of government, and you have what we have today. You actually have government workers demanding over paid salaries and demanding over compensated work place environments. This is totally out of control IMO.

I'm going to get a some back lash for sure by all the government employees on this internet fishing forum. So be it. Fly at it.

There are 13 municipalities in greater Victoria and only 350k residents. You don't have to be a rocket appliance to see that there may room for cuts at the municipal level...

It's sad how blatently overmanaged we as a nation have become. eventually it'll be our downfall and well end up with everything being privatized like our friends next door. I think our present government would love that. the sad thing then is we'll then be paying more and only a few will be getting rich at the top. They certainly don't seem to be helping when it comes to healthcare.

Part of the problem is we consistently demand to be over managed! Constant bleating for more rules and government intervention! People want the government to look after them and their pet causes, then complain when they do! Look at municipal bylaws, most are in place because neighbours want to control neighbours, but don't want to be the bad guys themselves. People constantly complain about safety regulations, but if there's an injury, immediately demand to know why the government allowed it to happen!
We are the government! Remember when people prized independence?

you're 100% right there ziggy. just yesterday i had bylaws at our door since we forgot to pay for our dog (tag license) my wife wasn't happy and was threatening to call bylaws to see if our neighbours dog had their license. I had to say, really? you really want to go there? you want to lower yourself to that level? took her awhile to see how that wasn't going to help anything. sometimes her french passion comes out abit over the top.... I'm happy though, knowing our civic government got there well deserved annual 25 dollars for our small indoor mutt. makes me sleep better at night.

Very tough balance to strike. Accessible, quality health care, a good education system, care and housing for the elderly (which we're all becoming), proper infrastructure(roads, sewers), clean, safe drinking water and food, drugs that cure our ailments but don't cause cancer or other side effects, resource exploitation to keep our economy chugging along but not at the expense of destroying our fish and wildlife resources, etc, etc, etc all seem to be common values that most Canadians want but there is no free lunch, so to speak. Getting nation-wide concurrence, given the vast diversity within our huge country, on what level of service and at what cost is a never ending debate.

There are tons of urban myths of bloated bureaucracy but, while it doesn't resonate with the populace there are as many stories and examples of exceptional services being provided despite under staffed and under funded programs at all levels of government. I think the old stand-by "walk a mile in another man's shoes" couldn't hurt - perhaps bring some of the bloat and excess of government back to reality of the private sector and on the flip side give private sector folks an appreciation for trying to deliver much needed services in an underfunded program with heaps of bureaucratic obstacles in the way.

I've worked on both sides - public and private and believe me the civil service does not have a monopoly on waste, bloat, abuse of funds, etc by a long shot (though it does hold a monopoly on idiotic bureaucratic process!!). Is the private model whereby a Scotia Bank can post record quarterly profits ($1.8 billion!!!) and immediately turn around and reward 10-15% of their loyal employees with lay-off notices better? I'd guess most of us (at least those without Scotia Bank stocks) would say no, but where does the happy balance between the two extremes - government bloat and wastage vs corporate greed and 1-percenters, exist?

It's the "American Dream" that everyone has but eventually when people realize they will never not be part of the 1% crowd or even close to it they think explore alternatives. Don't now too much about it but in Norway apparently the State owns 70% of Statoil the Noregian Oil Company and the Country has a $700 Billion rainy day fund. We on the other hand give the Big Multinationals free reign to rape and pillage the country with very few checks and Balances (drill baby drill) + (fill those pipelines) and at the end of the day we the taxpayer and the citizens that live here get to clean up the messes pay higher gas prices and soon even higher electricity and natural gas prices just to give away LNG and unrefined bitumen for almost free to somewhere else and don't even get anything for it. At this rate one day we will have nothing left to give but at least most of us won't be here then either. I'd lean more to the Government Bloat over the Corporate Greed and 1 percenters and put them all on a diet.

Yep - Norway has a huge rainy day fund. They also have a personal tax regime that is one of the highest in the western world. Their gasoline and diesel prices are at the top of the scale among European countries. They have user fees for both Doctor and hospital visits. Fat lot of good all those oil billions are doing the people who are there now.

Thanks Ziggy, you nailed it. People are asking for more regulation and decrying it at the same time when it affects them negatively. Look at the calls for councils to do something about those ferocious urban deer that are terrorising our streets and parks. We are the government. We are the problem.
