Going up to esperanza next weekend and was looking for some input on where to launch? We have always launched at Gold River and was thinking about Tahsis to save on the run.

I have driven the road to Tahsis the past two years. It's a logging road but not bad at all. The launch is large and has a hose for wash down and parking is available. I am heading there on Sunday and until Wedneday this week. PM if you want on update on the road.[8D]

The Tahsis road is in good shape these days.

Just keep in mind that it is a gravel logging road and you will find big logging trucks occasionally. There are 3 big hills of 18% grade, but they are "paved" with sealcoat. Gear down, go slow, no problem.

Once you are based in Tahsis, you have more options for fishing either Nootka Sound or Esperanza Inlet areas.

Also, I hear that the natives in Gold River do not have anyone manning the launch ramp and there are people there who are asking for launch fees who do not have authorization to do so.

We did Tahsis last yr and wasn't impressed with the travel. Going to do Esperanza via Zeballos this year. Another option for you to consider.

If you didn't like the Tahsis road, you will probably hate the Zeballos road.

It is rougher, steeper and narrower.

I drove through Zeballos on route to Fair Harbour/Kyuquot 2 years ago. From what I remember the road to Zeballos was fine, but it was the road from Zeballos to Fair Harbour that was steeper and rougher than the road to Tahsis.

Can anyone let me know if things have changed? Is the road to Zeballos not good anymore?

Zeballos road in its best condition is not as good as the Tahsis road.
The last time I was at Fair Harbour there was almost no parking and the told me they take reservations now. We are not logging out there right now so I have not been out there this summer. I would check to make sure you can park before you go,

I drove the road to Tahsis last year and the road to Zeballos 2 years ago and I remember the road to Zeballos being in pretty good condition and less steep than the road to Tahsis. I agree with you that the road from Zeballos to Fair Harbour is not as good as the road to Tahsis.

Does anyone have recent information on the condition of the road to just Zeballos? It is were we plan to launch to go to Esperanza Inlet.

I returned from Moucha Bay on Tuesday after spending 5 nights at Critter Cove. The Tahsis Road is in very good shape. Left my boat at Moucha and will be going back on Sunday for a few more days. I used to use the Gold River launch but will now use either Moucha Bay or Cougar Creek. Take it easy on the Tahsis road and you should have no problems. Oh yes, fishing was slow, but the two of us still managed to come home with 5 springs up to 28 pounds.
