Just wondering where you guys get the glow dip you use for your downrigger balls? I have a few balls i wouldn`t mind dipping. :p I guess it doesn't necessarily need to be glow dip but just wondering what you guys use. and where you get it from...

trhxs for the info Whole in the Water! looks like i have a little reading ahead of me. good info!

Just blast with a light coat of primer, let dry, then coat with a heavy coat of rockerguard. A few colors available. Cheap, durable, and easy to apply.

...because I like mayo on my ham sandwich, not lead residue. :D

Coated balls also protect your boat from lead scuffs, and are easier to handle.

Rockerguard wipes off and leaves scuff marks when comes in contact with gas or solvents wd40 and needs a hard coating to seal.

Perhaps someone could politely explain why people are coating or painting the down rigger balls?
Years ago there were black vinyl coated balls for sale for more money.
Is there some proof or stats that I could access? Why bother?

I don't coat but I picked up some that are coated and as Finished Biz mentioned, it keeps you from handling lead.

As I'm down to just a few brain cells now from partying too hard in the 60's and 70's, I need to hang on to the few I have left---good reason to coat

Probably also helps to see you're gear coming up in the early AM or late evening: those tennis ball yellow balls I see some of the Uke guides using sure stand out!

never experienced the coating rubbing off or scuffing on my boat. But I guess they don't come in contact with gas or solvents. And just to clarify, not talking about the asphault undercoating.

thxs for all the replies guys.
rockerguard sounds pretty interesting. would have never thought of that. I'll try to find some and give it a go.
have a good one,

Acklands Grainger carries a Loctite plastic tool dip which I have used before it does a great job. Oil gas resistant and does not scuff. Only comes in a couple of basic colors Black, Red, Yellow, Blue. Does a great job and last as long as the balls do. Brush on small can does about 12 -15 balls.

What's the product called?
I called Acklands, they remember it but haven't seen it for awhile and they could not find it in their computer, plus they went to the Loctite website and didn't see anything for it

Take the balls to a truck bed liner place and have them coated. I have LineX in my truck and the stuff is durable. I think you can get it in color. Has to be cheaper than $100 a gallon stuff.

LineX is a rough and hard product. Plasti Dip is soft and if you put a generous coating on your balls they don't hurt your fingers so much when you smash them on your deck.

Awesome. Thanks for the info! That's cheaper than $100 a gallon and I don't have too many to do.
