today for the first time i can remember in my life span i saw fishing boats coming out of nanaimo harbour and settting out nets in northumberland channel. I am assuming that they are fishing the chum run but I dont remember the last time that theres been a local fishery, though i am only 14 years old and missed the best fishing this area has had:(.
Does anyone know the fish count that have gone up the river yet?

if anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

sweet im sure there will be no incidental catch. not what i wanted to hear. the nanaimo river has a run of coho they must be wanting to take3 care of. not the way:(

are the coho this late around here too?I knew on the west coast they didnt show up til the big rain in early november..hm that isnt good
I catch the ferry from gabriola to nanaimo EVERY day to go school and i have seen more fish jumping all through the channel this year then any previous, you figure some of the fish i saw were coho?

yes rob i believe that there is a small late run of coho that go up the nanaimo river, at least there used to be. I believe that the coho will be going up the river until well past christmas.

yeh if there is any, spent my share of time on the river last year with no luck[xx(]

Well in 95/96 I think we drifted it five times and only hit two fish in the five drifts.I think in that section of river the fish move through very fast and its just a matter of hitting ir right,I had one morning down there in the early ninty"s where i hit about a dozen chrome 10-14 lb wild fish in about two hours in the run above the haslam.Came back that afternoon and nothing the next morning nothing. At one point the fish were rolling in front of me when they were going up river.

There was an opening Tuesday and Wednesday in front of big Q.

Didn't see any fish come up in the nets but saw about 10 sea lions take blasts from shotguns to the face.

Made me sleep better that night.

10-14 pounders those are some nice frikin lazer beams man. All this talk of stealheading makes me want to go.

Well at least those commercial boats are good for something:D

yeah if the commercial boats shoot a seal for every fish they catch i think thats a fair deal:)
though i spent all summer fishing springs off of decourcy and didnt loose a single fish to seals, but there are too many on the outside to even bother trying:(

RobTufnail how did you make out around decourcy? any thing big??

hey salty the biggest fish i caught this year was a 16 lbs spring in april, lost a fish at the side of the boat that day that was a good 20!:(

i fished out of my, rather little, 14 foot boat with only one manual downrigger and one rod, still managed to catch and release a fair few nice fish[:p]
june and july were great months, every time out i got fish, but other boats didnt, so it can be a bit sketchy. Some days you get nothing one night i came in with two 14 lbs fish and fishing was great like that for a week.

i have fished there the past few years since i got a cabin on ruxton island;)

p.s no seals either!

Good to know when it gets windy on the out side!
I have tried lots of spots with the crab trap no luck .
could you piont me in the right direction?
