Getting a fishing rod for Christmas – which one?

If your wife said she wanted to buy you a salmon trolling rod for Christmas, what would you ask for? Maybe something new or maybe another of something you already have - let’s get your thoughts.

I like the 10 1/2 foot Trophy Titan 3 Power, has a good back bone.
I like the Titans too but got tired of the butt sections falling off. Also newer versions were breaking. I switched to the West Coast Fury rod. Pretty slick

I just purchased a pair of the TFO 9’ downriggers rods as I got a discount on em. That was my wife’s Xmas gift to me. I plan to get out a lot more next year and probably more solo trips and was looking for a shorter rod. Can’t wait to try them out.

What is the flex? I have a pair of generic 9’0 for guests (easier to handle) but I use them for pinks and coho when by myself. A tad softer would be nice.

I bought a 9’ Ugly Stick Carbon Salmon/Steelhead rod this summer for fishing solo and I was impressed. The thin handle and small reel seat were a bit questionable but after catching about a dozen good fish with it including a 21 lb and a 22 lb spring I am a fan. It was sensitive enough at the tip for detecting the tentative bites on anchovies and still had lots of backbone for pulling a fish back out from under the outboard bracket. I liked it enough that Santa is getting me another one for Xmas. The knock on these rods is the paint chipping off and I’ve seen it in the store but it isn’t happening on mine so far. The price point was a big plus even before Gone Fishing’s Black Friday sale.
Rumour has it I’m getting a 9’ R3EF rod as well so I’ll be able to compare😁

I was the first in on a set of Reefs rod/reel combo with the new long arm scotty riggers,,,.... got a killer deal, and i mean killer . so far they have been great ...

Thanks everyone. I've had my eye of Reefs, but good to hear about all the others. TFOs are intriguing as well as the Shimano Technium. I wonder how asking for "one of each" would fly...? (which leads into "I need more reels for all these rods").

I have a R3F rod. It's my least favorite due to the reel seat. It doesn't stay tight. Especially a problem when fishing with newbies. Had a reel fall off while fighting a fish! It now ignominiously acts as the final back up.

West Coast do the same but Jeff put out a video showing to use Teflon tape to fix the problem.

It has a soft tip but the backbone is there. I compared it to my medium action 10’6 technium both with a 16oz weight on the end. Its a faster action than technium but not by a lot. Could be the extra length on the technium but not sure. They say the soft tip can deduct light bites and shakers and I could see that being true.

I like my R3EFs...curious why the price might be going up?
Everything that becomes popular goes up with fishing rods. These are by far the best up and comer rod.
Years ago it was the brown fenwick hmx that was 89 then 129 then 189 then garbage
Then it was the titans
Then the technium (still a good rod but expensive now)
And next will be the reef I bought a bunch of the current model which have updated reel seats the originals did have problems that is now fixed.

I agree with you about the reel seats. I've got one of the earliest ones where the cork spins and the reel seat doesn't stay tight, but the newest version has a much improved reel seat and double locking collars.
