Garmin 421 chartplotter

That's exactly the model and chart that I use. I find them to be excellent. No performance issues whatsoever. Garmin marine GPS units are highly regarded for their user friendliness, and I can see why. The unit is very easy to use and the G2 vision charts are great as well. Pulls in GPS satellites quickly and easily. The G2 vision charts have detailed contour lines that are incredibly useful for fishing, both when trolling and anchoring for halibut. The G2 vision charts also have auto routing features that are quite incredible in that it will route you to you destination through safe water based on a depth you can set. It also can pull up detailed tide and current information and all kinds of marina information. And it does a bunch of other stuff that is pretty incredible. The only downside is the small screen size, but it's a lot more money for more screen real estate. It might be nice, but I'd use what I have to navigate to Alaska - and I will!

I've got two Garmins in the boat. I'm very satisfied. If you plan to buy one get the SD card on line at GPS Central. They are much cheaper than any other placed I've looked.
