I typically launch out of Pitt Meadows marina, which has a fuel dock. The pump indicates 92 Octane (also indicates fuel is leaded, which it is not) - the operator has never been able to answer questions about the fuel and whether it has ethanol, etc. Their tank in underground as well, upkeep at the marina is a bit wanting and the fuel markup is crazy. Generally I don't use their fuel except in the middle of summer when they see significant volume of rec boaters filling up (in fairness, I've never had a problem with it and check my water separator frequently).
Starting this year, I went up the river to the Pitt River Boat Club at the mouth of the DeBoville Slough to try out their fuel dock. Their fuel operation is the complete opposite. Fuel tanks are above ground(visible/clean), fuel is premium/marked at a decent rate, operator was very knowledgeable. Like everyone, they can't guarantee ethanol free, but he was telling me that they test the fuel frequently and it tests as ethanol free.
I've said it several times on the forum that anyone that advertises ethanol free is generally not telling the truth or doesn't know what they are selling, but I think this is what's going on behind the scenes: Most gas stations have two tanks - premium grade (94-92) and regular grade (87), and the intermediate grades are blended at the pump out of these two tanks. Legislation requires fuel minimum ethanol content of total volume sold. I suspect that at certain stations the premium grade is still 0% ethanol and the regular grade is 10% ethanol. Actual % ethanol is dictated by the blend of regular / premium (say if you buy 89 or 91. All the grades are marked 'up to 10%' because fuel sellers just don't want to get into it with customers (and in case they can't guarantee that a certain load doesn't have some ethanol blended in at the refinery, or just through load contamination during trucking).
Anyway - it was interesting to talk to the marina operator and find someone that actually knew something and had actually done his own testing on the product he was selling. +1 for Pitt River Boat Club
