Got a charter on thursday with a big time writter from colorado he is doing an article on salmon fishing in B.C. but he does not want to hit the west coast because his wife wants to go who also is a writter for a magazine. i have heard of some nice biggg fish coming in off the big qualicum river any info will help this beaver get them wet.

Evening flood tide or slack is the best time. Purple haze, coho special or plaid flasher trailing a pink or bubble gum squirt with tandem tied single black hooks (sockeye gear) 27"s behind. Troll slow you will see the crowd right in front of the Big Q. Fish in tight, as close to the boundry bouys marking the line that you must fish outside of effective today. Fish your gear 20 to 35'in 35 to 60' feet of water. Caught lots this way last year at this time, biggest over 30lbs. ;)

Best of luck
Cheers ME

Is the closest launch to the Big Qualicum at Deep Bay? Is it a gong show at the launch now that Costa Lotta is no more? Must be a rush off the water at twighlight. I launched there two weeks ago to go to Tribune Bay and had to park two blocks away from the launch.

Anybody bin to the BIG.Q lately I was there all day yesterday and only hooked two fish, one of which was only on for maybe 30seconds and the other straightened the hooks(I wasnt paying attention for 3 seconds and when I looked over my guy had the rod pointed straight at the fish and hand on the reel, buy thye time i said anything it was all over)there was a pile of boats there for the evening bite but I only stayed until 6pm. Is the evening bite the one to fish around there? Tonight has a tide flooding until 7:06pm is that where I should be? Also I used to fish there alot when I was young with my Dad and we used to fish right out front of the river mouth in 35' to 75' feet of water now the consentration of boats is fishing in the bay just north of the river mouth, whats with that.Because there are no bounderies out there yet,and im not sure why?[8D]

40 to 50 lbs leaders with strong hooks let them run or you WILL lose them. The Big and Little Q Chinooks are scrapy and hit very hard. 7 till dark on a flood is best but mornings can be hot to.;) They love sockeye gear.:D

Cheers ME

Going up there in a couple weeks .Was out there last year at this time ,troled for a bit and dident get anything so we started jiging with a mackdeep for them and hit a 20+ but some guy wasent paying attention and ran over my line and i lost the fish but got a 10 pounder in any way [8D]

was there last night, had 5 hits and hooked 1 at 35 ft using bubble gum squirt 30" leader, the run down was approx 25 min from deep bay at 27 mph,(gps) ask on which way to go from deep bay, the owner was quit nice and showed us the way to leave, very shallow 90 ft at most on the run down.

Is it really that far? I haven't fished there in years...but I don't remember it taking that long. Then again, at the time, I remember running to Deep Bay in 17 minutes..don't remember how fast I was running though...normally you come around the spit and line 'er up and put the throttles forward...love the flat water that ECVI offers up!

:)

One of the favorites we used to use were Cut-Plugged Herring...mooched off the bottom....and one time we fished there with riggers and they absolutely LOVED a tomic plug with pink stripes down the side..in fact..the plug was pink and pale pale almost translucent but not quite. I can't remember the number..have it around here somewhere.

Guys at Bowser Bill's used to call it a "billy plug".....

I went and looked through the plug collection...still have it with the barb on it..hasn't been fished since 1991....LMAO!

224. That's the magic number. Also number 225 used to work well...in the 6 inch version...

I understand a lot of the guys use chovies and flashers there now?????

I'd love to go and check that fishery out...it was a lot of fun!!!...LOVE that flat water!!!!

Will there still be fish out from of the big Q come September? I am thinking of heading up for a weekend or two from Victoria the first few weekends of september.

This fishery would be a great one for me as I only have a small boat and on most nights it is safe enough to go out there and catch fish.
