I'm getting closer every day. At 65 I can still launch and do it all by myself, but that could change over night. I hope there will be someone to take me out when I need the help. Thanks to all of you who will take elders out fishing. I'll do it whenever I can.
Good fishing

I agree allow your friend to decide when enough is enough and yet to ease your conscious perhaps just sitting down one day with his wife and chatting to her about your concerns and such. If you have a wife take her along when you talk to his wife it it makes thngs a little easier on you.
There are many charter captains joining together and sponsering events where they take vets out and some of these guys you would think would need a nap or two simply are the first ones there. At any age to feel useless or that you just can not do these things any more is more deadly then doing them. it is a mind battle and when you feel useless then you lose your will and drive.
This simply might be the best medicine for him and yet there is your mind as well. Worry and all those "WAHT IF'S" will drive you crazy and tend to push you into making choices to fast or with out real thought. Talk to him and his wife and if you still feel concerned about his kids then talk to them as well.
For me and some I have known- to be told you can not go fishing because you simply are not young enough or healthy enough or what ever would simply send me over the edge. Come on It Is Fishing - Some things a man just has to do and fishing and boating is one of them.
Best to you and may you both have many more blessed fishing trips.
