Apparently it was the first week of the NL recreational cod fishery. Photos of a few fish from facebook. Some nice looking cod at 34, 38 and 40lbs according to the post. Maybe the inshore fishery is finally starting to recover.
Did that last summer with a Newfie buddy. Easy limit of 10 cod. 5 per person. Nothing anywhere near that big though. Fished off Exploits Island in Notre Dame Bay. No license required either, which I found odd.
Will never forget that trip as my friend died suddenly this spring.
Just back in Twillingate again visiting the inlaws, will go out for Saturday, Sunday, Monday openings over next few wks with a family friend weather permitting.
They've said easy getting their fish again this yr.
We've let the larger ones go in past yrs as they like the smaller ones meat better.
I grew up fishing for Atlantic cod on the Faroe Islands - best white meat fish there is. Nothing that we can catch here on the west coast truly compares imo.
I went cod jigging up in Tilting a few years back. It's my wife's family homeland. It's out there by Newfoundland standards even. We jigged cod by hand. No high grading fish It's illegal. The cousin that took us out is an old time fisherman. Boy was it fun. And Atlantic cod is easily one of my favorites. It's so good.
The rules I'm told here is if the cod is brought into the boat it stays in the boat, 5 per person max, but no more than 15 cod in boat even with 4 or more people
Agree its the best white meat I've eaten
