Taking my young kids first time fishing. First time I'll have fished in years. Any advice around Pt Roberts. The Salmon are jumping like crazy. What are they taking?
If they're jumping try dragging a short pink hoochie at anywhere from 60 to 25 feet ?
My guess is pinks or sockeye.
Probably some members here who fish the area often can offer better advice than mine. Please consider that only as a starting point.
agree with fishbc.org. Both pinks and sox will take pink/red squirts (mini hootchies) so if you can stack 2 rods on each downrigger and cover anywhere from 20-80 feet. Add a few dummy flashers if you have them. Look for the big schools on your sounder. the jumpers are a good place to start but it's not the jumpers you'll be catching. once you do find some big schools on the sounder stick on them and circle back and you should get into lots of fish. have a good one out there.
I fish the point a quite a bit each summer I havent been out in the last couple weeks. But another good option for kids is to jig buzz bombs in between the light house and the boat ramp in about 30-80ft of water. Good option for kids because they will catch flounder, bullheads and there have been a lot of salmon caught doing exactly this in the exact spot. Good luck. the guys at the gas dock in the marina are a good source as well.
