Fishing Line

Maxima Ultragreen 25lb test. I first place approx 100 ft of backing on the reels, change mainline annually and keep a close eye on the mainline for abrasion and often strip 10-20 ft off the reel to keep the line in good shape. Never had a fish break the mainline.

Thanks A.C, that sounds like pretty thorough test; I'll remember that for when the season fires up.

Thanks Captain Dudds

Hi all,Had a question for the leader line.Wouldn't it give a more action to a spoon if you could use 15# leader compared to 30#.When stacking i like to use a spoon by it's self. The hootchies i use a heavy leader to get a better action.Does anyone use spoons without flashers.Considering i haven't caught a fish on a coyote any responce would be appreciated, i have at least twenty of the dang things.

thanks the runt

Hey there Runt
My favorite artificial lure is the Coyote with a flasher.
I usually start with the Green/Cream on one side and the "copcar" Black/White or whatever on the other side give it 20 mn, if nothing, start changing colors. you will usually find something. If they are not working, start into the hootchies.

In short, yes. When fishing WITHOUT flashers, the lure will generaly have more flutter/action when fished with a lighter leader. Whether it be a spoon or bait/cutty. Make sure that the hooks are SUPER SHARP and that the mainline isn't set to deep in the release clip to eliminate 'popping' of the leader.

I ALWAYS change over after playing a fish. Little nicks are hard to detect in the wraps of a snelled bait set-up. Just plain SUCKS to feel fish #2 screaming across the wide open Pacific then have nothing but a curled up end of line with only one hook on it.

Some like it rough...
Others just puke!.

Is it better to use a spoon with a flasher or just by it's self? How long a leader do you use with a spoon if you use a flasher.? Same for a plug? or does a flasher dull the action of a plug??

I'm with you Salmon9. It's called sports fishing
25lb mainline and 25lb leaders for bait.

30lb on my hootchie leaders though cause I like the extra action.
Qickest way to measure a good length for hootchie leader is hold one end to the tip of your nose and extend your arm with the other. Tip of your nose to the tip of your finger. (try it and measure it against what you have been using.)

Am I the only one using 20lb mainline and 40 lb for leader ?

Change it annually and chop it back regularly, so far no problems even with springs over 40 lbs.

Own your own stuff.

That's what I use.
There isn't a Salmon that swims that can't be taken on 20# line.

Does anyone use the braided lines for Salmon? We have used the power pro for the last couple of years it seems to work really well. The odd thing is I have 2 reels with the moss green which seems to be a more camo line and the neno yellow. The yellow always out fishes the green 2 to 1. Anyone have any theory why that would be? The other nice thing about the line is you get the much smaller diamter which seems to be less drag when hooked up to the downriggers which means less false releases. Thanks Joe
