Dude,
I've been fishing and not always that successfully for decades, tho not exactly around Point Roberts, but I gotta tell you that you got one thing I lost a long time ago...Beginners Luck! From your post, you have no clue what to do and no clue how to do it. Find the nearest sporting goods store to your buddy's cabin, and spend 50 bucks on some tackle (I hope you at least have a rod and reel or two?). In exchange for the money, if it's a decent store, they should know something about fishing your beach, and when you can go for what. they get to the regs, and have at it. You'll probably catch more salmon this year than I will! I remember mooching quite well, and it sounds like a technique made to order for you...or using darts and jigging.

You might jig up a Flounder or Sole using small leadhead jigs tipped with a piece of bait like Squid, jig real slow and don't use too big a piece.

You can buy frozen Squid cheap in most Oriental grocery stores-brine in a heavy salt solution overnight.

I don't think colour makes much difference but weight does-how deep/how fast the current or tide is running is something you'll need to figure out yourself.
