Fishing Guide jobs -- salt water

Hi, I am new here and would like some information on how to become a salt water fishing guide. First off some of you may know me from Hunt Shoot .com and know the story behind me. For those that don't the short version is I was in a bad accident 41/2 years ago in which I just about lost my left leg, I have been out of work ever since. The claim is now settled (ICBC) and I would like to do something within my disabled abilities. I salt water fished just about my whole life -- mostly the West Coast of V.I. and feel that I would be able to do this type of job without too much stress on what is left of my leg.

I would welcome any input and if this is in the wrong section or against any of the forums rules mods please feel free to move or delete it.

Hey Al.....welcome aboard!! MB_Boy here from over on those forums and I do recall your accident a few years back. Been on both of those hunting forums for a LONG, LONG time ........LOTS of time I'll never get back!! Hahaha.

There have been a few threads on this very topic over the past few years providing some great guidance for those wanting to try their hand at guiding. I'll try doing a search as I may have also saved links to a few of these threads. If you use the "Advanced Search" function in the upper right hand side of the screen you may find what you're looking for; type in the word guide or guiding an search "Titles Only" to narrow down your search.

There are certain certifications you will need that will be outlined in these threads. They "may" differ for being a guide at a lodge vs being an "owner/operator" of your own operation.

Do you have a boat or would you wanting to work for an operation somewhere? Lots of outfits up and down the coast would likely want you to "pay your dues" and start doing a job at the lodge to learn the ropes etc before moving you into guiding but don't let that deter you as there are always exceptions to the rule. It may also help your cause in that you're not an 18-22 year old looking for a quick summer job.

Hey Al,

There are PLENTY of saltwater guides on this forum who will be able to answer questions you have and provide some guidance. There is also a West Coast Guides Association that may be able to provide some help.

Thanks Scott,
I did do a search before I posted but should have used the advanced search as you suggested. Yes spent a lot of time pre-accident on the Huntshoot site and am just now getting into it again. The disabled permit did help me out quite a bit but the most I was able to handle was two or three days at a time. My recovery has been slow & painful, 4 years I won't get back and don't want to remember. Thanks for the threads.
