Fishing Courses

I remember years ago there use to be courses you could take for Salmon fishing. Does anyone know of any courses out there for Salmon or Halibut? Would much rather take a course about fishing then for work any day...lol. Thanks.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

Ted Peck used to teach several classes on fishing in the Vancouver/Lower Mainland area back in the early '90's. I was lucky enough to have taken all of them except for the fly fishing course.

I even helped him with his light tackle mooching course when he no longer had a boat of his own.

Ted was a great fisherman who had mastered his craft, and he was one of the best story tellers I've ever had on my boat.

Unfortunately he passed away a number of years ago, far too early. I guess that heavy drinking and smoking will do that. :(

I took Ted's mooching course as well and ended up buying his custom made mooching rod and a Windex too. [8D]

Not to hijack this any further, but can anybody remember the name of Ted's boat?
Kenora Cutie, comes to mind, but not sure.
Always anchored by Salmon Rock outside Gibsons.

For Sea Ranger, as Poppa said, the rec centers or night school used to offer courses, maybe check Island Outfitters to see if they know of any. Or just hire one of the fine guides who contribute so heavily to this board and ask them about a learn and catch day.

Yes, Kenora Cutie - Not sure of the spelling. He named it after his wife who was from Kenora, Ontario.

Salmon Rock was one of his favorite spots.

He used to tell a story of hooking a fish there. He threw the anchor and chased the fish all the way up to Roberts Creek and back to Salmon Rock. He said he was within a 100' of where he hooked it when he netted the fish. It was a good size fish, but I don't remember what it weighed.

I miss Ted, he was one of a kind.

The way I heard it the fish took them from Robert's Creek to Salmon Rock and back!</u> ;)

Around 60# IIRC.

You do the honours Jim! ;)

Well, let's see if I can remember this one...

For those who don't know, Ted was a die-hard Salmon moocher. it was the only way he fished for Salmon. If he saw downriggers on your boat, he wouldn't get on until you had removed them and stowed them out of sight. His first words would likely be "get those f@#%^$'n downriggers out of here!"

So, Ted, his wife and another couple were fishing Active Pass one day. They were mooching with live Herring which they jigged themselves. When they jigged up their Herring Ted caught one that was just huge, biggest herring he had ever seen.

As they mooched for Salmon that day, they did pretty well, putting four good Chinook in the box. At the end of the day, there was one Herring left in the live bait tank. The big one.

Ted knew that the commercial guys would target big Lingcod in Active Pass and other passes in the Gulf Islands. So he figured that he would mooch himself up a nice Lingcod with this big Herring.

Ted took the tip off of his 10-1/2' mooching rod and rigged the herring in a mooching rig using only the butt end of the rod. He attached a 2 pound weight to get this big Herring down to the bottom to search out a nice Lingcond.

About half way to the bottom, the line went slack. Ted reeled up line as fast as he could and caught up with the weight, and slammed the hook home. The line again went slack. Ted reeled up fast again, and caught up with the fish as it surfaced beside the boat.

Ted Peck was looking into the eye of the biggest Chinook Salmon he had ever seen. He estimated this fish to be about 70 pounds. The eye that stared back at him was as big as a silver dollar, (no loonies in those days!).

The big Chinook thrashed at the surface for a couple of seconds, turned and started a run towards the Fraser River. Before Ted and his guests had a chance to throw the anchor and chase the fish, it had stripped out every inch of line from the reel and broke off as the last of the line exited the reel.

Yes more or less the fish smoked off east toward the Fraser and that's all she wrote.

Later a fisheries biologist told Ted a Herring that size was probably 17 or 18 years old. [8D]

Great stories guys.

I never got a chance to meet Ted. Didn't he have a TV show back in the 60's or 70's called 'Tides & Trails'?

If memory serves, Ted had a boat operator guy for that show named Bill Dennet (not sure of spelling). I grew up in North Van as neighbours of the Dennet's and Bill was also my best fishin-buddies uncle.

These stories of 'mooching' off Salmon Rock stir up some fine memories with me...

Yes, he had a TV show called Tides & Trails. It covered fishing and hunting.

Ted had some of the shows on video and I got to see a couple of them over at his place in Belcara when I went over to dinner at his place. I'd sure like to know what has happened to the videos of his shows. I'd love to see someone put them onto DVD and sell them.

He also used to do a radio talk show on CKWX. Anyone remeber "Flag-a-Snag" ? It was a blaze orange flag on a sharpened metal pole that you could stick into logs and deadheads to warn boaters of their presence in the water. That was Ted that started that program with CKWX.

I'm afraid that I don't know anything about Bill Dennet. This is the first I've heard the name.

how about tom thompson

Was he the wildlife photographer that would head into the woods for weeks at a time to film deer, moose, bears, etc.? Looked a lot like Glen Ford?

I recall going out to Surrey and to Lougheed Mall theaters to watch his movies when I was a kid.

What ever happened to him?
