Has anyone ever sedated large fish? Tranquilizer? Alcohol in the gills?
If I remember correctly, best way is carbon Dioxide diffused into a water tank, but that is reserved for fisheries. In the sports fishing world, sedating any fish you catch is actually against the law and considered fish harassment.

Well, I'm interested in seeing what DFO suggest for releasing large halibut. I wonder what's more harassing...sedating a fish to get hooks out, or releasing a fish with hooks still in?

I don't think they really care how it's done, as long as it is done.
I also think they will likely play hard ball if you are in gross contradiction of the regs.
So many people beeking off about keeping a large fish, DFO will have to react immediately to make a point.

If you can't safely remove the hooks in a big hali just clip the line and hope the hook dislodges or eventually rusts out. It not a guarantee that the fish will live when you cut the line but it's also very easy to ensure it bleeds out if you take too long or are too rough in trying to dislodge a hook, especially a deeply hooked one. I wish DFO did a better job of promoting best practices for release techniques for hali and salmon as well.

Scott, I am not advocating breaking the regs or anything, but realistically, I have been fishing the south island for over 11 years and have NEVER even seen DFO let alone get checked. With all of the cut backs by the feds there must only be 4 or 5 fisheries officers for the entire west coast it seems.

I hear you Gerry, but I have been checked both on the water and at the ramp at least a dozen times in the last 10 years.
I also do not advocate breaking the rules and would not risk coming in with an over or under slot Halibut.
too much at stake.

HAHA, okay we have been fishing the same areas for about 10 years, you have been checked at least a dozen times, me, not even once. You just must have a guilty look about you Scott :p

We used clove oil at the hatchery to knock em out.

Going to dump some on a hail to measure to make sure hes legal? :)

This magic clove oil you speak of... is this the stuff from a dentist office or from the aromatherapy shop? It definitely sounds like the safe way (for both me and the hali) to measure/release big ones.

Thanks,
F D

R.S There are no Under-slot Halibut, only overs and quantities.

It has to be diluted. I dont think people should be pouring clove oil willy nilly over fish. I was just a volunteer for the coho clip who got to knock em out. Knocking out itty bitty fish in a container would be much different then 50 plus pound fish in the ocean.

Hey Fin,
you're right, but on a possesion limit one has to be under.

Effective 00:01 hours April 1, 2013 until further notice:- The maximum length for halibut is 126cm.- The daily limit for halibut is one (1). - The possession limit for halibut is two (2), only one of which may be greater than 83cm in length.

p.s. sorry for the hijack Dave
