Fish Digestion......

How long does it take for a herring in a Chinook's stomach to go from fresh to an almost unrecognizable gooey chunk of meat?

i ate about 10 lbs of herring while in denmark...the akavit shnapps broke it down quickly. mmm pickled herring with currie sauce, burp,, springs got it right!!

Duuude........10lbs at one go......that is like so totally "hunger"........Bon Appetit.....:)

Reason I'm asking:- all the fish I catch lately have but one baitfish in their stomachs.

And of these.....90% of them were pretty well digested. I would think that a fish feeding would try to get as many as possible when the tidal dinner bell rings. Now if they (ones I got) ate those baitfish on an earlier tide change or thereabouts...I'd figure 6 hours until they hit my lure. So the baitfish pickings couldn't have been too good.

If digestion was way longer than that (say 12 hours) then the pickings would appear even slimmer.

But maybe I'm wrong.....maybe they digest really fast in salmon...

If no biologists on here then I'll guess I'll have to go Google........

I'm no scientist but did stay at a Holiday Inn once. 6 hours- no skin and getting mushy, 12 hours -pretty gooey, 24 hours- some spine and and head bits left maybe. Cohoes may digest faster, hence their proclivity for belly burn due to high acid in the stomach and quick summer growth indicating an efficient digestive system.

...mmmm thin sliced dark rye bread--spread with pork fat (fedt) and sprinkled with coarse salt --top with pickled herring and onion and enjoy with copious shots of Aalborg Akvavit with Tuborg chasers! Repeat as necessary--skol!! Easily digested.
