Predatory fish probably attacked boy at Montreal’s Jean-Doré Beach, park officials say

The artificial lake and beach at Jean-Drapeau Park are set to reopen to the public this Saturday, nearly a year after a boy was attacked by what park officials believe was a muskellunge, a large, predatory freshwater fish, The Gazette has learned.

Park management has ignored repeated requests by The Gazette for information about the June 2024 attack that resulted in an eight-year-old boy being taken to a hospital with deep gashes to his leg.

But according to internal reports and emails obtained by The Gazette under access-to-information legislation, the Société du Parc Jean-Drapeau (PJD), the paramunicipal agency that manages the park, now believes the boy was indeed injured by a muskellunge — more commonly known as a muskie — and that park officials have taken some steps to prevent similar attacks.
