First Nations call for halt to salmon fishery!

First Nations are also calling on the province to transfer management of the fishery to Indigenous groups, which is part of their constitutional rights and title.

It would be interesting to see how that works, given that it would end up being 'Musqueam Indian Band V. Every other tribe near or along the Fraser River' in court. Musqueam keeps doing their best to wipe out all Fraser fish stocks while other First Nations are calling for some form of conservation and management.

My question was complete sarcasm.

There is almost zero chance of survival from gillnets in our rivers! A set net checked quickly? Not a chance.

Live release boxes being used on the Fraser??? LOFL. 20 years on the Fraser and a fish in a gillnet is dead and NOT going in a live release box.

Fish that aren't wanted just get tossed back dead.

When does all this ******** stop? Someone has to say enough is enough... Never seen such greed. Never satisfied until ever last fish is theirs and gone. At some point in time it would be nice if everyone had the same rights and there was 1 set of rules which covered everyone.

all gill nets in the river should be banned ... no if's or buts
they want quota give the commies the job of giving it to them . let the fish in the rivers be.
how hard is that ....

Gill nets are a massacre and complete annihilation of sensitive runs.

The DFO closed areas around North Vancouver Island to protect sensitive Fraser Salmon, then allow the most destructive fishing method once the Salmon funnel up the river. Incredible.

First nations should be using traditional spears, and divergence methods with baskets.

Interesting how the interior nations are making official statements about halting the fisheries, yet there are still people reporting netting activity way in the interior... It kind of makes this statement I made contradictory.
Man I wish more of my native brethren would just learn how to sportfish instead of netting and snagging.

Divergence methods such as the rock dam on the Cap River? It may be less impactful than gillnets and 10/0 treble hooks in terms of maiming fish... But man there is a LOT of harvesting that happens there every year

A river that is 100% hatchery w zero impact on wild stocks. That is way better than them targeting depressed wild stocks with gillnets.

However....any river that has a hatchery FN should get priority once brood is taken.
