Barbed hooks are legal for bottomfish...illegal for salmon...be they treble or single.....
Trebles are legal for bottom fish and legal for salmon in many areas.
I was checked at French Creek one time by fisheries officer...entire tackle.
I told him..'before you start I have two tackle boxes on board ...one for salmon and one for bottomfish.....and I also have jigging and trolling rods on board'....which was true.
In one box all my hoochies were tied single hook barbless...in the other was nothing but lead jigs with barbed trebles.
he went through it all.......and did not say anything when finished.
But if they check you and all you have on the boat are a box full of barbed jigs..and....you have a box full of salmon.....there could be repercussions....
I use trebles for bottomfish.....but I hate trebles, especially barbed because they are a pain in the butt to get out of Rockfish when you have a "button-up"...that is , all three barbs are inside the fishes mouth and his mouth is closed.
What I often do (in spare time) is cut the welded barb off...and then flatten out the hook so the remaining two barbs are facing opposite. Then I crimp one of the barbs of the remaining two.
Way easier to get out and I've never lost fish doing this. Then Rocky gets to live another day.
I suppose I should really just go singles on a jig......
